SUMMARY:Port of Seattle's Part 150 Noise and Land Use Compatibility Study workshops starts in Burien on Wednesday\, June 5
DESCRIPTION:The Port of Seattle will begin a new multi-year Part 150 Noise and Land Use Compatibility Study update for SEA Airport in 2024\, starting with a workshop on Wednesday\, June 5\, 2024 at Gregory Heights Elementary School in Burien. \nThis free meeting will run from 6–8 p.m. \nTwo other workshops are scheduled for Thursday June 6 at Mt. Rainier High School\, and Saturday\, June 8 at Glacier Middle School. \nA Part 150 Noise and Land Use Compatibility Study is a voluntary FAA program that sets guidelines for airport operators to document aircraft noise exposure\, and to establish noise abatement and compatible land use programs. These noise abatement procedures and/or mitigation programs must be approved by the FAA in order to qualify for potential federal funding. \nThis will be the fourth Part 150 update undertaken at SEA Airport since the initial study was conducted in 1985. The study identifies and evaluates two components\, (1) aircraft noise levels and (2) land uses\, during two distinct phases of this study: \n\nNoise Exposure Maps (NEM) phase – contour maps are produced showing existing and future aircraft sound levels using the FAA-required 65 DNL noise metric.\nNoise Compatibility Program (NCP) phase – measures are recommended that are designed to reduce noise and incompatible land uses within the noise exposure area.  These may include noise abatement measures\, noise mitigation measures such as sound insulation programs\, and/or preventative measures.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Part 150 Noise Study and the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP) are separate efforts and will each have their own distinct public process and outcomes. The Port will have public comment later this year related to SAMP. For the latest on SAMP and to sign up for updates\, visit the Port’s SAMP page at Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). \n\n\n\nThe study will include extensive public engagement throughout the process. To begin these efforts\, the Port has scheduled three Study Kickoff Workshops in June. The workshops are in an open-house format with the following dates\, times\, and locations and anyone is encouraged to attend: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate:\nWednesday\, June 5\, 2024\n\n\nTime:\n6:00PM – 8:00 PM\n\n\nLocation:\nGregory Heights Elementary School 16201 16th Ave. SW\, Burien WA 98166\n\n\n \n \n\n\nDate:\nThursday\, June 6\, 2024\n\n\nTime:\n6:00PM – 8:00PM\n\n\nLocation:\nMount Rainier High School 22450 19th Ave. S\, Des Moines\, WA 98198\n\n\n \n \n\n\nDate:\nSaturday\, June 8\, 2024\n\n\nTime:\n10:00AM – 12:00PM\n\n\nLocation:\nGlacier Middle School 2450 S 142nd St.\, SeaTac\, WA 98168\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnyone needing language interpretation\, special accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act\, or questions answered\, should contact the Noise Programs Office at (206) 787-5393 or P150@portseattle.org. \n\n\n\nSnacks and childcare will be provided. SUMMARY:Volunteers needed to help document species & plants at Seahurst Park 'Bioblitz' on Saturday\, June 8
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 8\, 2024\, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.\, all are invited to join the Environmental Science Center (ESC) and the City of Burien at Seahurst Park for the first ever “Bioblitz” event! \nHelp document which species of plants and animals are present at the park during one snap-shot in time. \n“This event will help us better understand what animals to expect in this habitat and track changes over time\,” organizers said. \nAnyone can participate and become a community scientist! \nHere’s what you’ll do: \n\nTake a walk anywhere in the park during regular open hours\, take photos of the plants and animals you see\, and upload them to the iNaturalist app or website under the ESC Seahurst Bioblitz 2024 project.\nStop by during the hours of 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. to get help from ESC staff identifying organisms\, learn about the low tide creatures\, and find resources to help you become a community scientist.\nWe’ll be at the front of the park and on the beach during low tide; just look for the brown vests.\nYou do not have to know how to identify any organisms to participate!\nBy uploading photos to iNaturalist\, you allow other community members and scientists to identify organisms for you.\n\n\n\n\n“It is a lot of work for one scientist to cover an entire park to document as many organisms as they can. But by utilizing community science\, you all can help inform and increase our understanding of this local habitat.” \nLearn more by clicking below: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://bit.ly/4cJUw68\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor questions\, accommodations\, and more information reach out to our Community Engagement Manager at katy@environmentalsciencecenter.org. \n\n EDITOR’S NOTE: Since South King Media’s creation in 2007\, we have provided tens of thousands of dollars worth of FREE promotional and marketing services to local nonprofits and organizations. SUMMARY:'Hormone Walk' at June's 'Walk with a Doc' on Saturday\, June 15
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien:\n\n\n\n\n\nWABI Burien’s next Walk with a Doc will be on Saturday\, June 15\, 2024 at 11 a.m.\n\n\n\n\nMeet at Burien Town Square Park at 11:00 a.m. (the southwest corner at 480 SW 152nd St. Burien WA 98166).\n\n\n\n\nIn honor of Pride month\, I’ll be talking about two little hormones that cause a whole lot of hubbub: testosterone and estrogen.\n\n\n\n\nSpecifically\, I’ll be talking about their effects on the body and addressing some common misconceptions\, such as the idea that testosterone “makes men aggressive” and estrogen “makes women emotional”. It’s important to note that while these hormones can influence our ideas about gender\, biology alone does not dictate gender identity. In explaining this\, I’ll also talk a bit about where the hormones come from in the body and how they can be administered as medication. I won’t be going into how they are used to treat specific conditions though (I’ll save that for future talks).\n\n\n\n\n\nI want to acknowledge that this is a part of a paradigm shift in our understanding of society. If you find yourself scratching your head when you think about this stuff\, good! It’s better to be asking questions than dismissing it all entirely. It is a big topic so I won’t have all the answers\, but I can try to track them down\, so feel free to email me as well.\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking is one of the best things you can do for your physical and mental health!\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Decreased risk of heart disease\, cancer and depression\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Improved energy\, productivity\, happiness and sleep\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n See 100 reasons to walk at walkwithadoc.org/100reasons\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSweepstakes for Shoes!\n\n\n\n\nThere’s also another month left in the sweepstakes for On Shoes\, so I’ll bring the sign up sheet for that again!\n\n\n\n\n\n– Dane Nimako\, MD\nFamily Physician\n\n\n\n\n\nWalk with a Doc South Seattle
