SUMMARY:Enjoy a free ‘Walk-n-Talk’ to Mathison Park on Sunday\, Dec. 1
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nStart the new month by strolling with others on the December 2024 Walk-n-Talk. This Sunday\, Dec. 1\, 2024\, we’ll meet at Burien Town Square Park to stroll up and over to Mathison Park\, Burien’s highest point\, where we’ll walk the park’s pathway and grounds. \n\nWHEN: Sunday Dec. 1\, 2024\, meet at 2:00 p.m.\, start walking at 2:15 p.m. (Rain or shine.)\nWHAT/WHO: This is a FREE Walk-n-Talk open to people of all abilities\, including families and dogs. (Walk-n-Talkers should know that though this walk is “only” 2.1 miles\, it does include the slope up to Mathison Park\, which can be a challenge for those with mobility issues.)\nWHERE: Meet on the grassy knoll at Burien Town Square Park\, at 5th Place SW and SW 152nd Street.\n(480 SW 152nd St.\, Burien\, WA 98166) The 2.1 mile route takes us up and over Hwy 509.\nWALK TO: Mathison Park: 533 S 146th St.\, Burien WA (See the map below for our walking route.)\n\n\n\nDuring past Walk-n-Talks to Mathison Park\, Burien resident Eric Mathison has given the walkers a guided tour of his family’s former home and property.\n\nClick here for information about the park’s history and how the Mathisons came to donate their family acreage to the City of Burien. \nRead about previous Walk-n-Talks to Mathison Park HERE. \nHere’s a map of the Mathison Park Walk-n-Talk Route: (Click on the map for a larger view\, and print it out if you’d like to have a map as you walk.)  \n\n\n\nBrief history of the Park:\nThis five-acre park was dedicated on September 15\, 2006. Most of the land was donated by Ted Mathison in 1999. On April 16\, 2003\, two sisters\, Eleanor Carver Nelson and Dorothy C. Carver\, donated a key parcel allowing the park to connect between South 146th and 148th Street. They gifted their property to the Burien Parks Department in memory of their grandfather\, Herman Nickolas Peters\, who homesteaded in Sunnydale in 1889. \nPeters was born in Germany on February 21st\, 1868 and came to Minneapolis when he was 14. He arrived in Seattle in 1889\, just after the great fire. After buying a small paint store in Seattle\, he purchased 10 acres in Sunnydale. He later bought another five acres. He lived on his homestead property until his death in 1949. \nPeters operated a large chicken ranch and orchard between 5th Ave. South and 8th Ave. South\, and South 148th and South 150th. He built several houses on 6th Ave. South\, most of which were paved over by State Highway 518. \nPatrons of the Park: The Mathison Family\nIn the summer of 2006\, the Mathison siblings – Don\, Phil\, Eric\, Stephen\, and Susan – cut the ribbon to open Burien’s newest neighborhood park and playground. They grew up on the property\, raised by their parents Ted and Bernadine Mathison. \nEric Mathison\, a writer for the Highline Times\, noted the irony in Burien Plaza Starbucks adopting the park: his mom and dad didn’t drink coffee. His late father had written that “it is highly recommended that the property remain heavily wooded (my wife Bernadine loved trees).” With “great pleasure and trepidation” he turned over to the city of Burien what had been the family home since 1944. \nThe Mathisons bought the five acres “in the country” from the Sunnydale Goat Dairy for $1\,600 in August\, 1942. Ted Mathison laid 10 or 12 cinder blocks a day\, after work\, in building their house. The children had many adventures on the property – climbing trees\, building forts\, and picking fruit from their gardens. “Just because we lived on five acres on the top of a hill\, I don’t want you to think we were rich snobs\,” Eric said. “My dad was a Boeing middle manager. My mom took care of five kids and volunteered in the community. My parents were into voluntary simplicity before voluntary simplicity was cool. \n“I want Burien officials and park patrons to know how important the place is to my family and me. The benefits we received as kids (wooded trails with views of Mt. Rainier\, the airport\, and Puget Sound) we want to pass on to succeeding generations of children and adults.” \nAdditional history of the Park:\nRead more HERE\, on the City’s web site. \nIntentions for Burien’s Walk-n-Talk:\n\n“Encourage active living to support physical and mental health.” (Part of Burien’s “Vision”.)\nInitiate conversation between friends and neighbors\, new and old.\n\nCheck out our tip sheet: “Start Walking for Health and Well-Being”. \nFor further information\, please jot us a note: info@wabiburien.org \n(Photos by Maureen Hoffmann\, RedRedCircle.com • Burien WA)

SUMMARY:Old Fashioned Tree Lighting ceremony returns to Burien on Wednesday\, Dec. 4
DESCRIPTION:Every year since 1982 (with a brief pandemic pause)\, Burien’s Economy Wiring (an Advertiser) has hosted a good ol’ fashioned Christmas Tree Lighting event\, and owners Jay and Gail Smith are pleased to announce a return of this time honored tradition on Wednesday\, Dec. 4\, 2024.   \n“Please come to the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Wednesday\, Dec. 4\, 2024 at 6 p.m. at Economy Wiring Co\, Inc.; 633 SW 148th Street; Burien\, WA” (map below)\, an announcement reads. \nIn a slice of small-town America charm\, Carols are always on the list to prep the crowd in anticipation of Santa Claus himself\, clutching a bag full of candy canes to share and hitching a ride with the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department aboard their fire truck. \nAfter greeting the crowd and a few photo ops\, Santa typically leads the group in a countdown to the official lighting of the fir tree just a few feet east of the Economy Wiring building. Indoors\, Cookies and hot chocolate are served after the tree lighting in the store\, cozily warmed by the fire inserts on display. \nThe event typically includes an opportunity to share your abundance with those in need. Please bring an unwrapped toy or nonperishable food item for the Local Community Outreach. \nThis celebration has illuminated the Burien skyline for a long time now. Economy Wiring Company Founder Gwin Smith started the tradition in 1966. Over the years\, his small celebration has grown to include to include more of the community\, as well King County Station #2 Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department. \nIn the first eight years of the tree lighting\, Gwin climbed the huge fir tree himself to install the lights and then climbed back up in January to take them down. This changed some years ago\, when the fire department took responsibility for installing and removing the lights. \nCome join your neighbors in this decades long tradition celebrating a festive start to the holidays.
