SUMMARY:Saint Brigid’s Festival will bring Irish Film and Culture to Burien’s Tin Theater on Saturday\, Feb. 1
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Heritage Club and the Emerald City Irish Film Festival (ECIFF) are hosting a Saint Brigid’s Festival at the Tin Room Bar & Theater on Saturday\, Feb. 1\, 2025\, featuring multiple screenings of Stolen\, a powerful documentary that delves into a dark chapter of Irish history. \nOriginally shown at the 2024 ECIFF\, Stolen received acclaim for its moving depiction of the treatment of unmarried mothers and their children in Ireland’s mother-and-baby institutions from 1922 to 1998. \nThe film\, described by The Irish Times as a “whispered epic of still-raw secrets\,” examines how over 80\,000 women were incarcerated\, separated from their babies\, and subjected to harsh conditions under the influence of the Catholic Church. \n“Stolen resonated deeply with our audiences\,” said an Irish Heritage Club representative. “We’re thrilled to offer Seattle another chance to witness this incredible film in collaboration with Wildfire Films.” \nThe event will include screenings at 11:45 a.m.\, 2:30 p.m.\, and 5:30 p.m.\, with tickets priced at $10 per person. \nAttendees can expect live music from the Seattle Piper Club\, raffles\, short talks on the 2025 ECIFF season\, and a brief history of Saint Brigid. \nThe Tin Room Bar & Theater will open early for the event\, with a limited menu available starting at 1:30 p.m. \nFor tickets and more information\, visit: \neventcreate.com/e/saintbrigidinseattle

SUMMARY:City of Burien will celebrate Lunar New Year 2025 with free event on Saturday\, Feb. 1
DESCRIPTION:The City of Burien will be celebrating the Lunar New Year with a brand-new\, free community event from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday\, Feb. 1\, 2025. \nThis observance will be held in the Burien Library Multipurpose Room (Burien City Hall Chambers). \nThe Lunar New Year is celebrated each year on the second new moon after winter solstice on the lunisolar calendar in many parts of Asia and in Asian communities around the world. It became an officially recognized legislative holiday in Washington in 2024. \nThis year\, it was observed on Wednesday\, Jan. 29\, ushering in the year of the snake. \nThe Burien City Council presented a Lunar New Year proclamation at its Jan. 27 meeting in recognition of Burien’s 7\,000 residents of Asian descent. It also welcomed community members to attend the City’s first official Lunar New Year event on Saturday\, Feb. 1. The event is produced in partnership with the Burien Library\, Discover Burien\, and members of the community. \n“What is so wonderful about the upcoming first Lunar New Year celebration in Burien is the people behind it\,” said the City of Burien’s Economic Development Specialist Lorraine Chachere. “We are fortunate to have community members who have a connection to their city and have the devotion and energy to co-create a meaningful event by sharing cultural traditions to help our city thrive by building bridges within our community and beyond.” \nThe City of Burien’s Community Connectors discovered that community members had been wanting a Lunar New Year event like this in their own city\, which will feature treats\, games\, and a lion dance. \n“It’s important to provide a space where Vietnamese residents in Burien can come together to connect and celebrate Vietnamese culture\,” said Nha Khuc\, Burien Community Connector. “I have been living in Burien for about 11 years and finally seeing this event held in Burien brings me a sense of belonging. This Lunar New Year (Tết) event is not only a holiday celebration\, but also an opportunity to foster connections between people in our community.” \nThe event also provides a message of inclusivity and celebrating diversity in Burien. \n“I have been living in Burien since 2014 and I can’t wait to see more and more of my community’s characteristics in the City’s landscape and [events]\,” said Elly Trinh\, former Burien Community Connector. “It signifies to me that I matter\, my culture and experience matter. And that diversity is important to our city.” \nThe program was supported in part by the City’s Neighborhood Grants Program\, which helps bring community-led projects to life. \n“The best part of this program is our ability to support community-led initiatives\,” said the City’s Urban Forest Planner and Neighborhood Grant Program project manager\, Josh Petter. “It is exciting to see first-time projects\, such as the Lunar New Year celebration\, progress from ideas to reality.” \nLunar New Year is widely observed as a time for family\, traditions\, reflection\, and hope for the future. Community members are invited to share in these traditions at the City’s Lunar New Year Celebration in the Burien Library Multipurpose Room (Burien City Hall Chambers) on Saturday\, Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

SUMMARY:VOTE! Burien voters to decide on minimum wage initiative in Feb. 11 special election
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, Feb. 11\, 2025\, Burien residents will vote on Initiative Measure No. 1\, a proposal aimed at aligning the city’s minimum wage with that of neighboring Tukwila.   \nThe initiative mandates that large employers pay an hourly minimum wage equivalent to Tukwila’s rate of $20.10–$21.10/hour depending on business size\, with phased implementation periods for medium and small businesses. \nThe wage would be adjusted annually for inflation. Additionally\, the measure requires certain employers to offer existing employees additional work hours before hiring new staff or subcontractors. Protections against employee retaliation and penalties for non-compliance are also included. \nProponents argue that the measure addresses the inadequacies of Burien’s current minimum wage ordinance\, which took effect Jan. 1\, 2025 and pays $16.66–$20.24 depending on business size. They claim the existing law contains numerous exemptions and lacks an inflation adjustment\, leaving many workers without sufficient wage increases. \nOpponents\, including some city officials\, express concerns that adopting the initiative could lead to confusion and potential legal challenges\, as it would result in Burien having two concurrent minimum wage laws. Here’s a link to the city’s minimum wage Ordinance 855. \nThey also highlight the loss of local control over wage policies\, as future adjustments would be tied to Tukwila’s decisions. The outcome of this vote may set a precedent for other cities considering similar measures. \nBallots will be mailed to Burien voters on Jan. 22\, 2025\, and the measure can be passed via a simple majority (RCW 35A.11.100 and 35.17.240). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExplanatory Statement:\n\n\n\n “This measure would adopt an ordinance that requires covered employers to (1) pay a minimum wage for all hours worked within Burien\, and (2) distribute additional hours to its part-time workers prior to hiring new employees\, contractors\, or temporary workers if its existing part-time workers have the skills and experience to perform the work. \n\n\n “The minimum wage effective 30 days after passage will be equal to that in the City of Tukwila for large employers\, then adjusted annually for inflation\, with phase-in periods for smaller employers. The minimum wage for medium-sized employers will begin $2 lower\, with the reduction decreasing by $1 annually. The minimum wage for small-sized employers will begin $3 lower\, with the reduction decreasing by $.50 annually. After the phase-in periods\, all employers must pay the full minimum wage.\n\n\n “Employers may not retaliate against employees exercising rights under the ordinance and must comply with administrative requirements.\n\n\n “Remedies for violations include payment of: attorneys’ fees\, unpaid wages\, interest\, liquidated damages equal to twice the unpaid wages\, compensatory damages\, and a $5000 penalty for retaliation. Intentional violations could subject employers to revocation of their business license.\n\n\n “The existing minimum wage ordinance in the Burien Municipal Code differs in various respects including employer categories\, employee classification\, minimum wage calculation\, tip credits\, remedies\, and other rules.” \n\n\n\nStatement in Favor\n\n\n\n “Burien wages have fallen behind the cost of living. A full-time worker must earn over $30/hour to afford a one-bedroom apartment. People who work in Burien should be able to live here\, and no one who works full-time should live in poverty.\n\n\n “This measure raises Burien’s minimum wage to match nearby Tukwila\, Renton\, White Center\, SeaTac\, and Seattle. This will keep Burien competitive instead of driving workers out to make more money at the same job in the city next door. Vote Yes to give Burien a raise!\n\n\n “Business lobbyists have pushed their agenda through the Burien City Council to attempt to defeat this measure. They passed an ordinance that pretends to raise wages but actually excludes most workers. Anyone who gets tips or benefits\, even some people who work for multinational corporations\, won’t qualify for a raise. It’s a business-backed scramble to keep wages low.\n\n\n “Research shows that local minimum wage increases actually create jobs\, including small business jobs. Wages for workers earning above the minimum will also increase as employers seek to retain their skills and experience. When more people have more money\, that’s good for our local economy. Vote Yes to give Burien a raise!\n\n\n “Submitted by: Jennifer Fichamba\, Stephen Lamphear\, Kelsey Vanhee\, RaiseTheWageBurien.org” \n\n\n\nStatement in Opposition:\n\n\n\n “Vote “No” to giving control of our local wages to Tukwila’s voters. You read that right: this initiative\, created by an outside Burien group—the Transit Riders Union—would take wage decisions away from the people who live and work in Burien\, tying us to a city known for giant malls\, big-box retailers\, and corporate franchises. Do they not trust you and our elected city leaders to do what’s right for Burien?\n\n\n “As of January 1\, Burien already has one of the highest minimum wages in the country—$20.16 to $21.16 for larger businesses. This law was shaped with input from workers\, small businesses\, and labor groups\, ensuring higher pay while protecting the immigrant-owned restaurants and family-run shops that make our city special. Because it’s our own policy\, we can improve it as needed.\n\n\n “If this initiative passes\, Burien loses control over its wage policy. It’s not clear how we would get it back.\n\n\n “Vote “No” to keep Burien’s future in our hands. Vote “No” to preserve a policy we can refine\, rather than surrendering local control and hurting the small businesses and workers that define our community. Vote “No” to protect Burien’s right to choose what’s best for Burien.\n\n\n “Submitted by: Eric Papczun\, VoteNoForBurien.com” \n\n\n\nMore info on this initiative is available here.

SUMMARY:'Beginning' continues at BAT Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Burien Actors Theatre (BAT) brings the U.S. premiere of “Beginning” by David Eldridge to the stage in Burien\, continuing through Mar. 9\, 2025 at Kennedy Catholic High’s Little Theatre. \n“Beginning\,” set in the late autumn of 2015 in London\, opens on a warmly lit flat in the wee hours of the morning. A housewarming party for Laura (Lucy Pearce) has just ended and one guest\, Danny (Gerald Germajesty Price) still lingers. The air is abuzz with two people giving the pretense of saying goodbye when the desire to spend the night together pulses as an undercurrent to every word said. \nAs the play progresses\, the flirty fun dissolves to reveal the reality of two lonely people in their early 40s grappling with the ways life has disappointed and diverted them away from what they most desire. Will they lean into vulnerability and take a risk or bid one another goodnight and each continue their lonely way? \nA play that runs 100 minutes and consists only of a conversation between two people necessarily relies on the chemistry between the two players to carry the show. Happily\, Pearce and Price’s dynamic was natural\, joyful\, and completely believable\, carrying the audience from magnetic flirtation to the taunt expectation of sexual tension\, to the depths of insecurities and traumas and back again to peals of laughter and the joy of pure\, human connection. \nEach actor lived in the moment\, molding the mood into something spontaneous and delightful\, the picture of two strangers trying to hook up but being unsure. \nPearce’s Laura embodied a successful 40-something woman effortlessly\, lounging casually on her couch in her nylons with a glass of wine\, pulling out her best flirtations in hopes of catching Danny\, but nevertheless respectful of his skittishness and uncertainty. Pearce’s portrayal is full of humor and heart\, delivered in a strong accent that never wavered throughout her performance. \nPrice’s Danny exuded charisma\, and it was easy to see why he was the object of attraction for Laura. Price’s performance was full of genuine emotion and spontaneity\, encapsulating the fun of the interplay between two uncertain people with one goal in mind. Though he struggled with the accent at times\, Price successfully brought Danny to life as a whole human\, warts and all. \nThere’s a maturity to “Beginning.” It’s not an impulsive one-night stand engaged in without thought or care about consequences as one might have in their 20s. It’s a sober look at the loneliness of middle age and the realization that\, sometimes\, our happy ever after isn’t a mystical gift bestowed on us by a fairy godmother. Sometimes it’s intentionally forged through the first courageous step onto a road we never thought we’d walk down but nevertheless leads home. \n\n\n\n Beginning runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.\, Feb. 14 through Mar. 9\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Ten candidates for the two open Highline School Board seats have advanced to the public interview on Wednesday\, Feb. 26\, 2025.  \nFollowing the resignations of board members Melissa Petrini and Azeb Hagos in January\, the Highline Public Schools Board of Directors are in the process of appointing new directors for District 4 and District 5. \nPetrini represented District 4\, encompassing Normandy Park and parts of Des Moines and SeaTac\, while Hagos represented District 5\, covering the Des Moines area. \n“I look forward to learning more about the candidates and their interest in serving on the Highline School Board\,” said School Board President Joe Van. “The Board of Directors are committed to our Highline Promise to know every student by name\, strength and need\, and these two new board members will play a vital role in serving our community.” \nThe Board of Directors received 13 applications from community members eager to serve on the Highline School Board—eight candidates from District 4 and five candidates from District 5. Their willingness to step forward reflects a deep commitment to our schools and students. \nAfter reviewing all applications\, the board identified 10 candidates to move forward to the interview process\, five for each open board seat. \nPer Board Procedure 1114\, if there are more than five applicants for a district\, the board will select five candidates to advance to interviews “whose prior experience and expressed interest suggest that they will be most able to contribute breadth of view to the board’s deliberations as well as effectively represent a large segment of the community.” \nDistrict 4 Candidates:\n\nDamarys Espinoza\nKenneth Kemp\nMichael McCurdy\nSarah Postel\nCarlos Ruiz\n\nDistrict 5 Candidates:\n\nPierre Blosse\nUsame Dahir\nJeanne Dore\nChad Harper\nRobert Ribaudo\n\nCandidate interviews will take place in a public meeting on Wednesday\, Feb. 26. District 4 candidates will be interviewed first in alphabetical order. District 5 candidates will be interviewed second in alphabetical order. \nCandidate Interviews\n\nWHEN: Wednesday\, Feb. 26\, 2025: 4:30-7 p.m.  \nWHERE: Central Office Board Room\, 15675 Ambaum Blvd. SW\, Burien (map below).\n\nThe interviews will also be livestreamed and recorded. \nFollowing the interviews\, the board will deliberate and anticipate voting to appoint new board members on Mar. 5. \nNewly appointed board members will be sworn in on Mar. 19 and will immediately begin their service. \nThe new directors for District 4 and District 5 will serve until those elected in the November 2025 election take their oaths. \n“The Board of Directors are grateful to every candidate who applied for their willingness to serve. Strong community engagement is vital to Highline’s success\, and we appreciate all who participated in this process\,” President Van added.
