He has been with me most my adult life\, through good times and bad times\, I cannot even imagine what my life will be without him…I am beyond heartbroken.” \nDoug was known to many around Downtown Burien as a member of the city’s “Team Clean Sweep” crew\, who ensures that our streets are clean and inviting. \nA custom-made Superman-themed bench dedicated to Doug’s memory will be unveiled on April 2\, 2025\, according to George\, symbolizing his role as a superhero to all those who knew him. \nUPDATE: The “Bench Dedication” for Doug on Wednesday April 2\, will take place at Noon in front of the Discover Burien office at 611 SW 152nd Street:

SUMMARY:Come Walk-n-Talk through Gregory Heights on Sunday\, April 6
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \n\n\n\nOn our April Walk-n-Talk\, we’ll stroll from Burien Town Square\, southbound to the southern hilltop area of Gregory Heights\, to the overlook\, hoping we can look out to a view of Mt. Walking starts at 2:15 p.m. \nPlace: Meet on the grassy knoll at Burien Town Square (480 SW 152nd Street\, Burien\, WA. at the corner of SW 152nd & 5th Place SW). \nWho: Open to all walkers. Be aware that the route slopes downward and then back up again\, so it’s got some hillier areas than many of our Walk-n-Talks. Walkers are welcome to do all or part of the walk\, and all may walk at their own pace.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoute: \n\nWe will follow the “Gregory Heights Long Map” on the Walking Maps Page\, (also attached below).\nMeet at Burien Town Square Park.\nWest on SW 152nd\, then south on Ambaum.\nSouth on 8th Ave SW.\nCross SW 160th St. at the light\, then walk westward along the south side of the street to 10th Ave. SW.\nTurn south to walk along 10th Ave. SW. On the east side of the street\, starting at 16220\, we’ll see three houses built in 1961 in the “Gunther’s Highland View” Subdivision (of the Gunther’s Tower history). These three “mid-century modern” houses\, side-by-side\, share the same sculptured concrete block exterior\, and add to the architectural interest found around Gregory Heights.\nWe’ll continue south down the hill to SW 166th St\, go west 3 blocks\, head north 2 blocks\, then west again at SW 162nd St.\nThen north on 16th Ave SW\, passing Gregory Heights Elementary and crossing over SW 160th St\, to SW 158th St.\nWe’ll “hug the lake”\, continuing on SW 158th\, 12 Ave. SW\, SW 156th\, back to 10th Ave. SW\, then eastbound on SW 152nd back to Town Square.\n\nDistance: About 3.25 miles round trip. (This walk is longer than our usual 2.25-2.5 mile Walk-n-Talk.) \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThis is a FREE event and is enjoyable for all\, including friendly four-legged friends. Every month since August 2011\, neighbors and Burien city visitors have gathered\, walked and talked for fun\, conversation and exercise. Come join the group! Chat with someone you wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to meet with. If you have a pedometer or other sort of step-counter\, bring it along. Let’s see how many steps we can tally. \n\n\n\nCheck out our tip sheet: “Start Walking for Health and Well-Being”. \n\n\n\n(Please click on the map for a larger view\, then print it out if you’d like to bring it with you on the walk.) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIntentions for Burien’s Walk-n-Talk: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Encourage active living to support physical and mental health.”
(Part of Burien’s “Vision”.)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInitiate conversation between friends and neighbors\, new and old.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor further information\, please jot us a note: info@wabiburien.org.

SUMMARY:Walk with a Doc in Burien and talk about osteoporosis on Saturday\, April 12
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \n\n\n\nOur next walk will be on Saturday\, April 12\, 2025 at 11 a.m. We’ll be talking about osteoporosis\, plus I’ll answer questions about vitamin D. \nI’ve attached a great HANDOUT from the Canadian health care system about vitamin D testing in particular. Hope you’re enjoying the change in weather! \nMeeting Place: Burien Town Square Park 480 SW 152nd St.\, Burien\, WA 98166 Meet at the large\, south end sculpture. In case of inclement weather\, we’ll meet in the lobby of the Burien library – 400 SW 152nd St STE 100\, Burien\, WA 98166 \nLeader: Dane Nimako\, MD After a 15-20 minute talk\, we’ll all walk together westward to Lake Burien Park\, and then back to Burien Town Square. \nIf this will be your first time on a “Walk with a Doc”\, please REGISTER HERE. This will also put you on the email notification list about future walks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDane Nimako\, MD Family and Lifestyle Medicine Physician Walk with a Doc South Seattle He/Him/His (Link: Why Pronouns Matter) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook | Twitter | LinkedIn | Instagram | YouTube | Newsletter Inspiring Communities through Movement and Conversation \n\n\n\n\n\nApril Walking Challenge!\n\n\n\nAlso\, in case you missed it\, Walk with a Doc is running a walking challenge this month. Participants in the US and Canada will receive one raffle ticket for each day that you take a walk for at least 20 minutes between April 1st – 30th. They’ll be raffling off 20 pairs of Altra shoes in partnership with Fleet Feet. \nHere’s what you need to do: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister and download the tracking sheet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalk! Aim for 20 minutes per day from April 1st – 30th.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubmit your results between May 1st – 5th to enter the raffle.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBut of course\, we all know walking is it’s own reward 😏 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbout Walk with a Doc\n\n\n\nAccording to the American Heart Association\, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking is low impact and easier on the joints than running. It is safe – with a doctor’s okay – for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions. \nWalk with a Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. You’ll take a few minutes to learn about a current health topic from a healthcare professional\, then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk and fun conversation. It’s a great way to get out\, get active\, and learn about health from a trained professional\, instead of the internet. \nThe South Seattle chapter is run by local family physician Dane Nimako\, MD. You can find him practicing at a few different organizations around Seattle\, but he runs the chapter independently as a way of bringing health education outside clinic walls. \nGood news! There is a new Walk with a Doc chapter in North Seattle that will be meeting the first Saturday of each month\, led by child psychologist Karen Toth\, PhD. I joined their first walk at Discovery Park yesterday. Future walks may be at a different location but you can find up-to-date details here: https://walkwithadoc.org/join-a-walk/locations/seattle-washington/ \nThe Walk with a Doc program was started in Columbus\, OH in April of 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir and has now expanded throughout the world. You don’t need any special gear and there are no special rules. Walk your own pace and distance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalk with a Doc is a separate organization and not affiliated with Walk/Bike Burien (aka “WABI”)\, but WABI loves to promote walking and is happy to let folks in the south end know about other walking opportunities in the area.

SUMMARY:VOTE! Special Election is Tuesday\, April 22
DESCRIPTION:King County voters will decide whether to renew funding for the Regional Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) in a special election on Tuesday\, April 22\, 2025. \nProposition No. 1\, placed on the ballot by the King County Council through Ordinance No. 19884\, would authorize a seven-year property tax levy beginning in 2026 to support continued operation and technological upgrades to the countywide forensic fingerprint and palmprint identification system. \nThe measure proposes a tax rate of $0.0275 per $1\,000 of assessed property value. For a home valued at $885\,000\, the maximum annual cost would be about $24.34 in the first year. \nThe levy would replace a previous voter-approved measure that expired at the end of 2024. \nThe AFIS program is used by law enforcement agencies throughout King County to aid criminal investigations through advanced fingerprint matching and forensic identification services. \nThe system also supports crime scene processing\, suspect identification\, and evidence analysis. \nIf approved\, the new levy would include statutory limits on annual increases and would provide exemptions for qualified seniors\, disabled persons\, and veterans\, as allowed under state law. \nThe proposition would also continue the oversight role of the AFIS Advisory Committee. \nBallots must be returned or postmarked or placed in a ballot box by 8 p.m. on Tuesday\, April 22\, 2025. \nThere are two ballot boxes (both will close at 8 p.m. on April 22) in Burien: \n\nBurien Town Square Park: 480 SW 152nd Street (corner of 5th Ave SW & SW 152nd Street) Burien\, WA 98166\nBoulevard Park Library: 12015 Roseberg Avenue South Seattle\, WA 98168\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information is available at kingcounty.gov/elections. \n

Schwieger noted that Highline High School is currently the only school in Highline Public Schools with a high school-level drama program\, underscoring the importance of keeping arts programs funded and supported in public education. \n“Our show anchors on its political commentary for LGBTQIA+ rights and equality\, while commenting on our current state of the world\,” Schwieger added. “Our kids are raising their voices and taking steps toward defining a better future for us all.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets Available at the Door\n\n\n\nTickets are available at the door with cash only\, with prices of $8 w/student ID\, $10 under 18\, and $15 over 18. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHighline High School is located at 225 S 152nd Street\, Burien\, WA 98148:
