SUMMARY:Walk-n-Talk Burien’s Indian Trail on Sunday\, June 1
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nOne of Burien’s outdoor gems is the “Indian Trail”.\nIf you haven’t discovered the Indian Trail yet\, this is your chance! This wandering\, varied public trail winds high above the shoreline strip of SW 172nd St. – the “Sunrise Trail” –  and then\, from Three Tree Point northward\, parallels Maplewild Ave. SW – the “Sunset Trail”. \nIt is said to be a remnant of a Trail used long ago by the local Native American tribes in the region as they traveled from the south end of Puget Sound – the Salish Sea – to the north\, thus its name of the “Indian Trail”. Some portions of the Trail are heavily-wooded and lush green (shaded!). Other areas are wide open to the sky (hot and sunny). There are three public beach access points along the way. \nThere are many homes along the length of the Indian Trail\, both on the waterside and the hillside. Some homeowners are lucky to be able to drive right up to their homes. For others\, they have a garage high up on the hill\, and must walk a switchback trail down to the main trail to get home. Just think of buying a new couch or refrigerator and having them delivered. Just think of toting groceries along the trail to home\, or hauling your recycling and garbage along the trail to get up to the road. Living along the Indian Trail is a lifestyle question! \n\n\n\n”WABI would like to acknowledge that we will be on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle\, the Duwamish People past and present\, and honor\, with gratitude\, the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.”  \n\nDate: Sunday\, June 1\, 2025. The weather forecast calls for a warm day\, so BRING A BOTTLE OF WATER!\nTime: 2:00 meet-up. Walking starts at 2:15 p.m.\nPlace: Meet at the corner of  SW 167th Place and 31st Ave. SW (NOT at Burien Town Square.)\nThis is in the Gregory Heights neighborhood above Three Tree Point.\nRoute & Distance: Our Walk-n-Talk starts cliff-high in Gregory Heights\, winds down the Trail to Three Tree Point. At one point along the way\, there is a 180 degree view of Normandy Park\, Des Moines\, Redondo\, Mt. Rainier\, Tacoma\, the islands of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. We then trundle back up another portion of the Trail to Maplewild\, at the 16000 block. Upon reaching Maplewild\, we turn around\, retrace our steps and go back UP\, UP\, UP the hill to our starting point! The total is about 3 miles\, round trip. The elevation change is about 300 feet.\nParking: There is parking on the street in the Gregory Heights neighborhood\, near the starting point. (Public parking along Maplewild is difficult to find.) As always\, please be respectful of private property when parking your car.\nNOTE – Trail Terrain: This is a beautiful walk\, paved wide in places\, a narrow dirt path in others. Please be advised that this trip has quite an elevation change going down the hill and then back up. The path is also quite rugged and irregular in places. Because of these factors\, it’s a poor choice for those with health and mobility limitations\, and the trail will not accommodate strollers for children.\nLast year\, before heading back UP the hill to Gregory Heights\, several walkers stopped at the Three Tree Point Store for refreshments.\n\nThis is a FREE event and open to all (that can handle the terrain of the trail)\, including friendly four-legged friends. \nAs with all of our walks\, walkers may choose to do all or just part of the route. And walkers may always walk at whatever pace is most comfortable for them. \nParking Option\nIf you do not want to walk back up the hill to the starting point\, but would rather finish at the Maplewild end\, we suggest that you carpool with a friend\, leave the first car somewhere along Maplewild (or within walking distance)\, and then drive the second car to the starting point. At the end of the walk\, you can hop into the first car and go back and get the second car. \nFor further information\, please contact Maureen Hoffmann at info@wabiburien.org. \nClick on the map below and print a copy to take with you on the walk:

SUMMARY:Free gun lockbox giveaway at Burien Town Square on Friday\, June 6
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day on Friday\, June 6\, Public Health – Seattle & King County is teaming up with local cities and community organizations to distribute free gun lockboxes across King County\, with a strong focus on South King County. \nEvents will take place in Burien\, Kent\, Auburn\, Renton\, Federal Way\, and Skyway\, offering residents free gun lockboxes\, safety education\, and a chance to hear from local leaders and public health experts. \n“This recent reduction in incidents of gun violence is encouraging\,” said Eleuthera Lisch\, Director of the Regional Office of Gun Violence Prevention. “But rates of gun violence are still far too high and we have more work to do. Everyone has a role to play in preventing gun violence.” \nLockboxes will be available while supplies last. The goal is to promote safe storage as a tool to prevent both community violence and accidental shootings in homes. \nSouth King County Lockbox Giveaway Events – Friday\, June 6:\n\nBurien: 4 – 5:30 p.m.\, Burien Town Square\, 400 SW 152nd Street (hosted with Progress Pushers)\nKent: 2:30 – 4 p.m.\, Kent City Hall Square\, 220 4th Ave S (hosted with Community Passageways)\nAuburn: 4 – 5:30 p.m.\, Auburn City Hall\, 25 W Main St (hosted with the City of Auburn)\nFederal Way: 4 – 5:30 p.m.\, Federal Way Community Center\, 876 S 333rd St (hosted with Progress Pushers)\nRenton: 1 – 2:30 p.m.\, Renton Community Center\, 1715 Maple Valley Hwy (hosted with Freedom Project)\nSkyway: 3 – 5 p.m.\, Grocery Outlet parking lot\, 11656 68th Ave S (hosted with Urban Family)\n\nAccording to data from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office\, gun violence in the region — especially in South King County — has seen a decline. In the first quarter of 2025\, shots fired incidents dropped 37% compared to the same period last year. \nLisch emphasized the importance of locking up firearms\, saying it not only prevents theft and misuse but can also save lives. “If you own a firearm\, it’s vital that you store it locked whenever it’s not in use\,” she said. \nThe initiative is part of the county’s broader Lock It Up program\, which encourages all gun owners to store firearms securely at home and in vehicles. \nMore information on the Lock It Up program can be found at the Public Health – Seattle & King County website here.

SUMMARY:Men in Black Festival announces fun new ‘Alien Abduction Look-Alike’ contest for MIBBB Fest on June 13
DESCRIPTION:Calling all alien abductees! The annual Men in Black Birthday Bash\, aka MIBBB Fest\, will kick off on Friday\, June 13\, 2025 with a fun new event – the Colleen Rafferty Look-Alike Contest. \nThe contest\, which will be held at Marina Mercantile from 6:30–8:30 p.m.\, is inspired by the character of Colleen Rafferty\, played by Kate McKinnon on Saturday Night Live. The recurring Rafferty character is interviewed by government agents after allegedly being kidnapped by aliens – here’s a sample sketch: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttendees are encouraged to come to this event dressed as their version of Colleen (or Carl) Rafferty. \n“We can’t wait to be in a room of Colleen and Carl Raffertys and create a space where they can share their favorite stories\,” said MIBBB Fest co-founder Steve Edmiston. “We believe the tickets for this free event in this cozy venue will go quickly.” \nTickets Are Free But Act Fast\nFree tickets are now available at Eventbrite. \nThe event is open to anyone 21+\, and will be held at Marina Mercantile in Des Moines (map below). \nThe look-alike event is non-commercial; free for participants to enter; no purchase is required; and no endorsements are implied. Complete look-alike contest rules (and award categories) will be posted before June 13. \nMIBBB Fest commemorates the appearance of UFOs off Maury Island\, WA and the world’s first encounter with the iconic Men in Black. On June 21\, 1947\, Harold Dahl of Tacoma reported six flying saucers off the shores of Maury Island. The next morning\, Dahl alleged he was visited by the first “Man in Black.” Dahl’s story helped launch 1947’s “Summer of the Saucers\,” when thousands of UFOs were reported worldwide (watch the award-winning short film here). \nMIBBB Fest is anchored by its signature cosplay event\, the Men in Black Birthday Bash on Saturday\, June 21\, held at the Quarterdeck in Des Moines with a view across Puget Sound to Maury Island. \nIn the days leading up to the event\, ticket-holders receive multiple “mission briefs” explaining the history and mythology of the Maury Island Incident. \nAdditional events for the weeklong MIBBB Fest will be announced soon. For more information\, including news about additional events: \n\nVisit the MIBBB Fest website\nFollow MIBBB on Facebook \nFollow MIBBB on Instagram\n\n\n\n\nAbout MIBBB Fest\nHeld each year in Des Moines\, WA\, MIBBB Fest commemorates history’s first alleged encounter with the so-called Men in Black\, the infamous 1947 Maury Island Incident\, and the top-secret government intervention that followed. SUMMARY:Walk with a Doc and Talk about Alzheimer’s on Saturday\, June 14
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nOur next walk will be this Saturday\, June 14 at 11 a.m. \nWe’ll be talking about Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia\, specifically how we screen for it and how to prevent it. I understand this can be a tough subject to talk about\, but the more we talk about it\, the better we can manage it. \nI get asked a lot about supplements that can possibly help but as always I prefer to tie things back to lifestyle changes. That said\, if there are any vitamins or supplements you’re particularly curious about let me know! \nBe sure to check out the handout below!\nMeeting Place: Burien Town Square Park\n480 SW 152nd St.\, Burien\, WA 98166\nMeet at the large\, south end sculpture. In case of inclement weather\, we’ll meet in the lobby of the Burien library – 400 SW 152nd St STE 100\, Burien\, WA 98166 \nLeader: Dane Nimako\, MD\nAfter a 15-20 minute talk\, we’ll all walk together westward to Lake Burien Park\, and then back to Burien Town Square. \nIf this will be your first time on a “Walk with a Doc”\, please REGISTER HERE. This will also put you on the email notification list about future walks. \n\nDane Nimako\, MD \nFamily and Lifestyle Medicine Physician \nWalk with a Doc South Seattle \nHe/Him/His (Link: Why Pronouns Matter) \n\n\n\nFacebook | Twitter | LinkedIn | Instagram | YouTube | Newsletter\nInspiring Communities through Movement and Conversation \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbout Walk with a Doc\nAccording to the American Heart Association\, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking is low impact and easier on the joints than running. It is safe – with a doctor’s okay – for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions. \nWalk with a Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. You’ll take a few minutes to learn about a current health topic from a healthcare professional\, then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk and fun conversation. It’s a great way to get out\, get active\, and learn about health from a trained professional\, instead of the internet. \nThe South Seattle chapter is run by local family physician Dane Nimako\, MD. You can find him practicing at a few different organizations around Seattle\, but he runs the chapter independently as a way of bringing health education outside clinic walls. \nGood news! There is a new Walk with a Doc chapter in North Seattle that will be meeting the first Saturday of each month\, led by child psychologist Karen Toth\, PhD. I joined their first walk at Discovery Park yesterday. Future walks may be at a different location but you can find up-to-date details here: https://walkwithadoc.org/join-a-walk/locations/seattle-washington/ \nThe Walk with a Doc program was started in Columbus\, OH in April of 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir and has now expanded throughout the world. You don’t need any special gear and there are no special rules. Walk your own pace and distance. \n\nWalk with a Doc is a separate organization and not affiliated with Walk/Bike Burien (aka “WABI”)\, but WABI loves to promote walking and is happy to let folks in the south end know about other walking opportunities in the area.

SUMMARY:‘No Kings’ rally will be in Des Moines on Saturday\, June 14
DESCRIPTION:Two grassroots organizations in Des Moines are joining a national day of protest on Saturday\, June 14\, 2025\, with a “No Kings” rally\, urging residents to take a stand against what they call authoritarian overreach and political corruption. \nThe event\, organized by Seniors for the Constitution and Indivisible Des Moines\, will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. this Saturday\, June 14\, 2025 at Big Catch Plaza\, located at the corner of S. 216th Street and Marine View Drive (map below). \nOrganizers are promoting it as a peaceful demonstration that includes live music\, free water\, signs\, and materials for participants to make their own. \nThe groups\, which together claim more than 400 active members\, are also encouraging attendees to bring non-perishable food or cash donations for the Des Moines Food Bank\, because all local food banks are struggling. \nThe rally is part of a coordinated national movement protesting President Donald Trump and his allies\, whom organizers accuse of threatening democracy\, civil liberties\, and public welfare programs. \n“No Kings” day is a response to “the increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies\,” according to event materials. The statement cites concerns about attacks on free speech\, immigration crackdowns\, erosion of court authority\, and proposed cuts to Medicaid alongside tax breaks for the wealthy. \n“We’d like to see young people and families join us\,” said one member of Seniors for the Constitution. “We’re doing this for them\, for our grandchildren and yours.” \nParking is available at the plaza\, in nearby lots\, and along side streets. Carpooling is encouraged to ease congestion. \nMore details are available at www.seniorsfortheconstitution.org.
