SUMMARY:Casa Italiana hosting blood and stem cell donor drive
DESCRIPTION:Local residents will have an opportunity to help save lives by donating blood or registering as blood stem cell donors during a special donor drive this Friday\, Aug. 1\, 2025 at Casa Italiana Cultural Center in Burien. \nThis blood drive event is in honor of Joe Megale. \n“Some of you may know Casa’s own Joe Megale is well into the process of battling leukemia\, a process that has a direct & serious involvement with blood supply\,” organizers said. “Please join us in giving blood to support the needs in our community.” \nThe event\, hosted in partnership with Bloodworks Northwest and NMDP (formerly Be the Match)\, will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 13028 1st Ave S. (map below). \nBlood donations will take place inside the Bloodworks Northwest mobile unit parked onsite\, with a break for lunch from 12 to 12:45 p.m. \nAppointments are required and can be made online or by scanning the QR code provided on event materials. \n“Your cells. Their cure. Join the movement\,” reads a message from NMDP\, encouraging donors to consider joining the stem cell registry to help patients in need of life-saving transplants. \nThe drive is part of a broader effort to increase access to life-saving blood and stem cell donations for local patients. \nBloodworks Northwest notes that it takes less than an hour to donate blood\, and the need for local donors remains critical year-round. \nAll blood donors must be at least 16 years old with photo ID. \nOrganizers request that donors eat a hearty meal and stay well hydrated prior to their appointment. \nChildren under 16 are not permitted at the donation site for safety reasons. \nMore information and appointment scheduling is available at bloodworksnw.org/giveblood or by calling 800-398-7888. \nFor more details\, click here.

SUMMARY:Explore Burien’s hidden trails on a Walk-n-Talk to Seahurst Beach
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s forecast to be a mild day\, cloudy and in the 70s this Sunday\, Aug. 3\, 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\nLet’s walk through the wooded hillside down to Seahurst Beach. We’ll meet at 2:00 for our Walk-n-Talk at the top of the hill and walk down the service road to the beach. On the way back up\, walkers may choose either the road or the paths through the woods to get back up the hill. This road\, and the paths on the adjacent hillside\, are the “best kept secrets” known by striders and dog-walkers around town. It’s a beautiful gem of a spot!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalk Details:\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Date and Time: Sunday\, Aug. 3\, 2024. Meetup at 2:00 p.m. Walking starts at 2:15 p.m. Walk-n-Talks happen rain-or-shine\, smiling and talking all the way no matter the weather.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Meetup Location: Approx. 13200 Shorewood Dr. SW\, Burien WA 98166\n(There’s a passageway in the cyclone fence in the corner.) See the map below.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Directions: From Burien Town Square Park\, go WEST (toward the water) on SW 152nd St.\nTurn RIGHT and go NORTH on Ambaum Blvd. SW until SW 130th St.\nTurn LEFT on SW 130th St. (at Lakeside Milam)\nGo up the hill\, following the road and veer RIGHT on SW 131st St.\nDrive one block to Shorewood Drive SW\, turn left and look for parking.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Meet: at the passage in the corner of the cyclone fence.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Parking Suggestions: Parking at the site is limited and we suggest that\, if possible\, you carpool with other walkers. Since the walk starts in a residential area\, we remind you to be considerate of private property and driveway accesses.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Walk Conditions and Time: As with all of the Walk-n-Talks\, each walker may go at whatever pace is most comfortable for himself or herself. The walk DOWN the hill on the road takes about 20-30 minutes; it is a hard-packed gravel\, full-width road. The walk back UP the hill on the road is most gradual and easiest\, taking another 20-30 minutes depending on pace. The walk UP along the trails is steeper and rougher\, but quite beautiful. It may take 30 minutes or more (depending on how many photos you stop to take.)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n For those not wanting to walk back UP the hill\, we suggest that friends carpool\, leaving one car in the parking lot at Seahurst Beach\, then driving to the walk starting point. Once completing the walk DOWN\, you may then go to the car in the parking lot and drive back to retrieve the other car.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBelow is a map from the City of Burien showing our meeting place\, the purple-dashed service road and the red-dashed trail (at the top of the map.) Seahurst Park Service Road Map\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? For questions\, comments and suggestions\, please contact Maureen Hoffmann at info@wabiburien.org.\n\n\n\n\n\n(Click on the map to see\, and print\, a larger version.)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhotos by Maureen Hoffmann\, except where noted.

SUMMARY:Free 'Walk with a Doc' series will focus on health system issues
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \n\n\n\n\nOur next walk will be this Saturday\, August 9th\, at 11AM. I’m sad to say that next month\, Saturday\, September 13th\, will be the last walk I’ll be leading. I know it’s a rather sudden decision\, but next month will mark 2 years since I started the South Seattle chapter. And now I’m ready to start working on a new project\, though I’m not sure what it will be yet. I’ll keep you posted! \n\n\n\nIn the meantime\, I thought I would devote these last two talks to a couple subjects that I’ve always loved to talk about: the primary care clinician shortage and the importance of public health infrastructure for preventative care. The two are in many ways intertwined and unfortunately under attack. So I’ll be focusing on how these issues might impact how you navigate health care in these coming years. \n\n\n\nMeeting Place: Burien Town Square Park480 SW 152nd St.\, Burien\, WA 98166Meet at the large\, south end sculpture. In case of inclement weather\, we’ll meet in the lobby of the Burien library – 400 SW 152nd St STE 100\, Burien\, WA 98166 \n\n\n\nLeader: Dane Nimako\, MDAfter a 15-20 minute talk\, we’ll all walk together westward to Lake Burien Park\, and then back to Burien Town Square. \n\n\n\nIf this will be your first time on a “Walk with a Doc”\, please REGISTER HERE. This will also put you on the email notification list about future walks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDane Nimako\, MDFamily and Lifestyle Medicine PhysicianWalk with a Doc South SeattleHe/Him/His (Link: Why Pronouns Matter) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook | Twitter | LinkedIn | Instagram | YouTube | NewsletterInspiring Communities through Movement and Conversation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Walk with a Doc\n\n\n\nAccording to the American Heart Association\, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking is low impact and easier on the joints than running. It is safe – with a doctor’s okay – for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions. \n\n\n\nWalk with a Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. You’ll take a few minutes to learn about a current health topic from a healthcare professional\, then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk and fun conversation. It’s a great way to get out\, get active\, and learn about health from a trained professional\, instead of the internet. \n\n\n\nThe South Seattle chapter is run by local family physician Dane Nimako\, MD. You can find him practicing at a few different organizations around Seattle\, but he runs the chapter independently as a way of bringing health education outside clinic walls. \n\n\n\nGood news! There is a new Walk with a Doc chapter in North Seattle that will be meeting the first Saturday of each month\, led by child psychologist Karen Toth\, PhD. I joined their first walk at Discovery Park yesterday. Future walks may be at a different location but you can find up-to-date details here: https://walkwithadoc.org/join-a-walk/locations/seattle-washington/ \n\n\n\nThe Walk with a Doc program was started in Columbus\, OH in April of 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir and has now expanded throughout the world. You don’t need any special gear and there are no special rules. Walk your own pace and distance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalk with a Doc is a separate organization and not affiliated with Walk/Bike Burien (aka “WABI”)\, but WABI loves to promote walking and is happy to let folks in the south end know about other walking opportunities in the area.

SUMMARY:Memorial service for racing legend Steve Huff in Renton and Kent
DESCRIPTION:Friends\, family\, and former teammates will gather on Saturday\, Aug. 16\, 2025\, to honor the life and legacy of Steve Huff\, a respected\, world record-holding local racer and passionate supporter of trades education. \nA memorial service will be held Saturday\, Aug. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at New Life Church in Renton\, followed by a public Celebration of Life from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Kent\, a location closely tied to Huff’s lifelong love for racing. \nAs we previously reported\, Huff sadly passed away May 21\, 2025 at the age of 58. In 2020\, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic upper tract urothelial cancer\, a formidable challenge he faced with the same unwavering grit and determination that defined his life both on and off the racetrack. \nIn his own words: \n\n\n\n “In the years since my cancer diagnosis I finally became ‘the man I always wanted to be’ living with intention\, surrounded by love\, and giving back in every way I could.” \n\n\n\nGive to the Steve Huff Memorial Foundation\n\n\n\nIn lieu of flowers\, attendees are encouraged to contribute to the newly formed Steve Huff Memorial Foundation\, which will provide scholarships for students pursuing education in the trades\, a cause Huff championed throughout his life. \n“Thank you to all of the friends and former teammates that have reached out over the last few months. We appreciate your support\,” organizers wrote. \nHuff’s legacy includes not only a decorated career in racing but also years spent mentoring the next generation of mechanics\, fabricators\, and engineers. His commitment to accessible trades education earned him admiration and love far beyond the racetrack\, \nThe Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum invites all who knew Huff — and those touched by his story — to join in remembering his contributions and spirit. \n\n\n\nMaps\nNew Life Church is located at 15711 152nd Ave SE\, Renton\, WA 98058: \n\nHydroplane & Race Boat Museum is located at 5917 S 196th St\, Kent\, WA 98032: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n EDITOR’S NOTE: Steve Huff was a steady\, strong and inspiring presence in South King County\, and it’s still difficult to grasp that he’s gone on to a better race.
