She holds two degrees in Black studies from Cornell University and Michigan State University and is described as an interdisciplinarian whose work centers the Black experience. \nThe event is part of the “America at 250th: Honoring History. DESCRIPTION:An artist known for blending philosophy and humor will be featured at an Artist’s Reception at Burien’s Humble Vine on Saturday\, Feb. 21\, 2026\, from 5 to 8 p.m. \nJohn Morreall\, vice president of Artists United of South King County\, retired to the area four years ago and lives in Normandy Park. He has devoted much of his retirement to painting\, focusing on humorous imagery\, an extension of his academic career in aesthetics and the philosophy of humor. \nMorreall launched the serious study of humor with his 1983 book Taking Laughter Seriously and has since published five additional books. As a consultant\, he has delivered more than 600 seminars and presentations on the benefits of humor for business\, health care and educational groups. His clients have included AT&T\, IBM and the IRS\, and his work has taken him across the United States and Canada\, through much of Europe and to Japan\, China and South Africa. \n“Now that I’m retired\, I can practice what I preach by putting more humor into my painting\,” Morreall said\, describing his current focus on painting various kinds of humor ranging from playful fantasy to political satire. \nIn the last two years\, Morreall has concentrated on the comic possibilities of Sasquatches\, creating 41 paintings in a series he calls “Sasquatch Scrapbook.” Ten of those works are currently on display at Humble Vine. Townsend Room in Building 8\, the Student Union\, at Highline College (map below). The event is open to the public\, and community members are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating. \nThe 33rd Legislative District includes Burien\, Des Moines\, SeaTac\, and Normandy Park\, along with most of Tukwila\, southern portions of Renton and parts of Kent. \nLawmakers will take questions and engage in discussions about issues affecting the region. \nOrwall has represented the 33rd District since 2009 and was appointed to the Washington State Senate in 2024 after serving 15 years in the House of Representatives. Her work has included efforts on rape kit reform\, suicide prevention\, anti trafficking laws\, consumer protections\, language access in schools and air quality. She has more than 20 years of experience in the public mental health system\, workforce development and affordable housing. \nGregerson\, a Highline College alumna\, was first appointed to the Legislature in 2013 and previously served as mayor of SeaTac from 2008 to 2015. She helped lead the nation’s first $15 minimum wage initiative\, passed in Seattle in 2014 and later adopted by jurisdictions across the country. \nObras was appointed in December 2024 and serves on the Health Care and Wellness\, Labor and Workplace Standards and Community Safety committees. An immigrant from the Philippines and first generation college graduate\, Obras has more than 25 years of experience in human services\, including work focused on homelessness\, anti hunger programs\, youth development and services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
