SUMMARY:Lace up for Burien’s free Walk-n-Talk through secret passageways on Sunday\, Mar. 1
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nOh! Everybody loves a secret pathway! Well…it’s not so secret for the neighbors that live in the area\, but let’s explore and enjoy it together. \nDate: Sunday\, Mar. 1\, 2026 (Rain or shine… but SUNSHINE is forecast!)\nTime: Meet-up at 2:00. Walking starts at 2:15.\nPlace: Meet at the New Start Community Garden\, aka the “Shark Garden”.\n614 SW 120th St.\, Burien\, WA 98146\nWho: Open to all walkers\, welcome to do all or part of the walk\, and all may go at their own pace.\nRoute: (See the map below.) We’ll meet at the Shark Garden (there’s plenty of parking). Then we’ll proceed west on SW 120th St. until we get to 8th Ave. SW. From there\, we head south on 8th until it looks like we can go no further… but we’ll walk alongside the lichen-covered vehicles\, along the path through the underbrush! (You’d never know it’s there!) We come back out to the paved street for about 5 blocks\, then more hidden pathway. We finally come back out of the brush and get to SW 132nd\, where we head east\, pass Hazel Valley Elementary\, cross 4th Ave. SW and keep going to 2nd Ave. SW. We’ll turn north\, wave hello to Mary and Joseph\, head up to 130th\, then west back to the 8th Ave. SW passageway\, and retrace our steps back to the Shark Garden. There are a few short patches of sidewalks\, and a few short sloping stretches\, up and down. Total distance is 2.5 miles. \nOnce back at the Shark Garden\, everyone’s encouraged to stroll through and admire the Community Garden plots to see what plants are starting to grow. And don’t forget to admire all the art created by students and installed on the fence along the road! \nThis route was revealed to me by a nearby resident and walk/bike advocate. There’s talk of “improving” this to encourage its use as a north-south route for walkers and cyclists (avoiding Ambaum and 4th Ave. SW) \nThis is a FREE event and is enjoyable for all\, including friendly four-legged friends. Every month since August 2011\, neighbors and Burien city visitors have gathered\, walked and talked for fun\, conversation and exercise. Come join the group! Chat with someone you wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to meet with. If you have a pedometer or other sort of step-counter\, bring it along. Let’s see how many steps we can tally. \nCheck out our tip sheet: “Start Walking for Health and Well-Being”. \n(Please click on the map for a larger view\, then print it out if you’d like to bring it with you on the walk.) \n\n\n\nIntentions for Burien’s Walk-n-Talk:\n\n“Encourage active living to support physical and mental health.”
(Part of Burien’s “Vision”.)\nInitiate conversation between friends and neighbors\, new and old.\n\nFor further information\, please jot us a note: info@wabiburien.org

SUMMARY:Free repair event coming to White Center’s Log Cabin on Saturday\, Mar. 14
DESCRIPTION:Residents in White Center and surrounding south King County communities will have an opportunity to fix broken household items for free at a community repair event on Saturday\, Mar. 14. \nKing County and the White Center Teen Program will host a free repair event this comingSaturday\, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the White Center Fieldhouse\, also known as the Log Cabin\, at Steve Cox Memorial Park (map below). \nThe event will bring volunteer repair specialists from the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks\, known as “Fixers\,” back to the park to help residents repair everyday items. \nAt community repair events\, skilled volunteers attempt to repair and mend small household items and clothing. Popular items brought to similar events include small appliances and electronics\, lamps\, vacuums\, toys\, electric power tools\, small furniture such as chairs and drawers\, jewelry\, clothing and other textiles. \nOrganizers note that some items cannot be repaired at the event. Fixers will not work on gasoline-powered equipment\, cell phones\, tablets\, microwaves\, knife or tool sharpening\, lengthy reconstructive repairs or major clothing alterations. All items brought in\, including clothing\, fans and vacuums\, must be reasonably clean. \nRepairs are offered on a first come\, first served basis for each participant’s first item while volunteers are available. If participants bring additional items\, organizers say the repair team will attempt to address them after all first items have been reviewed. \nResidents with questions about items they plan to bring can contact event coordinator Tom Watson at tom.watson@kingcounty.gov or 206-477-4481. Additional details are available on the event’s Facebook page and at KingCounty.gov/repair-events. \n“Hope to see you there\, and hope we can help with your repairs and mending!’ organizers said. \n \nThe Log Cabin is located at 1321 SW 102nd Street in White Center:

SUMMARY:Future of Burien’s Shark Garden in focus as school district explores relocation plans on Monday\, Mar. 30
DESCRIPTION:Community members are encouraging public attendance at Highline Public Schools Capital Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC) meeting this coming Monday\, Mar. 30 as they highlight the importance of the Shark Garden as a key community resource in the Burien and White Center area. \nAs we previously reported\, Highline Public Schools is considering constructing a new Cascade Middle School on property adjacent to the garden. While organizers said they would welcome a school on the site as it was previously\, they are concerned that the garden would need to be destroyed and removed as part of the redesign. \nThe CFAC meeting is scheduled for Monday\, Mar. 30\, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Puget Sound Skills Center Health Sciences Building\, located at 18010 8th Ave South in Burien. \nThe CFAC plans to finalize its recommendation at Monday’s meeting; more info here. \nWhile public comment will not be taken\, the meeting is open for viewing. \nCFAC leaders acknowledged community concerns raised through feedback\, particularly about the future of the Shark Garden\, and said they are working to identify a new location for it\, including potential sites at the former Beverly Park campus or the current Cascade Middle School site after demolition. \n“Clearly\, no one wants to lose the Shark Garden from our community\,” officials said. “Highline staff are committed to helping the community garden\, currently at the Salmon Creek site\, to locate a new home.” \nOrganizers describe the Shark Garden as “a critical community asset\,” citing its role in food access\, education\, environmental stewardship and community health. \nAccording to a summary provided by organizers\, the 1.6 acre site has delivered measurable impacts across South King County communities. Since 2021\, the garden has produced about 7\,000 pounds of organic produce for local food banks and contributed more than 16\,500 volunteer hours. \nThe site also serves as an education and gathering hub\, hosting more than 145 free classes and community events and drawing participants from 22 ZIP codes. More than 600 people are served annually through workshops\, while community events attract over 2\,000 participants each year. \nShark Garden also supports 76 affordable garden plots\, with about 90 percent used by families of color\, including immigrant and refugee households\, according to the summary. \nIn addition to food production and education\, the site contributes to environmental research and sustainability efforts. It includes an apiary\, native plant habitat and serves as a research location for the Washington Bee Atlas Project documenting pollinators. \nAdvocates say the garden’s location in a neighborhood identified as having high environmental health disparities underscores its importance as a community resource offering access to green space\, education and locally grown food. \nMore info is available in the CFAC agenda packet here.
