DESCRIPTION:The King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) is inviting high school students from across Washington and beyond to take part in the 55th Annual Green River College All High School Drags and Car Show on Friday\, June 5\, at Pacific Raceways in Kent. \nKCSO contracts with the City of Burien for its police services\, so it’s possible some B-Town cops might participate. \nThe event\, known as “Beat the Heat\,” will run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Pacific Raceways (map below)\, and will give students a chance to race against KCSO patrol vehicles on a quarter mile drag strip. \nAccording to the Sheriff’s Office\, the event is open to high school students with vehicles capable of completing the course from the starting line to the finish line. \n“This is your chance to challenge the King County Sheriff’s Office on the track and race against our patrol vehicles\,” police said in announcing the event. \nOrganizers said students will compete against their peers for school bragging rights while participating in one of the region’s longest running youth drag racing events. \nIn addition to racing\, attendees can view a Green River College race car exhibition\, a Super Pro wheel standing drag race exhibition\, a Cornwell Tools display\, a junior dragster display and special feature race cars. \nThe event is presented in partnership with Green River College and includes support from Pacific Raceways\, the Pacific Northwest Drag Racing Association\, Cornwell Quality Tools and other sponsors. \nThe Sheriff’s Office described the event as an opportunity for students to enjoy a day of high performance vehicles and organized racing in a controlled track environment.

DESCRIPTION:All are invited to help protect Salish Sea shorelines from invasive European green crabs during a free European Green Crab Molt Search Training hosted by Burien’s Environmental Science Center (ESC) on Saturday\, June 6\, from 10 a.m. to Noon at Seahurst Beach. \nAt this training you’ll learn: \n\nAbout the threats posed by this invasive species and what’s being done about it.\nHow to identify native and European green crabs.\nHow to do a Molt Search and submit your findings through MyCoast.\n\nThe training is part of Molt Search\, a citizen science project managed by Washington Sea Grant’s Crab Team and Washington State University Extension. \nOrganizers said the training will also cover the environmental threats posed by European green crabs and ongoing efforts to track and manage the species in Washington waters. \nParticipants will learn how to conduct a Molt Search and submit findings through the MyCoast reporting platform\, according to the ESC. \nThe event will begin inside the Environmental Science Center at Seahurst Park before moving outdoors to the beach. Organizers said volunteers will remain in the high tide zone\, where terrain includes uneven rocky and sandy surfaces. \nRegistration is required for all participants. Organizers said she often performs by the light of a kerosene lamp while portraying historical figures in a style that is uniquely her own. \nThe event is being presented by the American Association of University Women in partnership with the Highline Heritage Museum. \nAccording to AAUW\, the organization works to empower women and girls through support for higher education opportunities and advocacy for gender equity. DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \n\n\n\n\nThis month the WABI Weekday Walkers will travel to the campus of South Seattle College in West Seattle to savor a three-way treat for garden-lovers: the Rose Garden\, Arboretum\, and Chinese Garden. Come with us to enjoy the many plants in full bloom across all three areas.  \nWe’ll meet at South Seattle College\, Entry #1: North Parking\, along 16th Ave. This is the entrance closest to the gardens. Please park along 16th Ave and meet by the entrance sign. \nStarting with a loop through the campus to see the public art and several buildings\, we’ll then wander through the lovely Rose Garden\, featuring many blossom colors on mature rose plants. This will lead us to the Arboretum and its varied collection of conifers. Finally\, we’ll take a path around and through the Chinese Garden to view the meadows\, archways and ponds. The total distance is about 2 miles on a variety of surfaces including dirt and gravel pathways\, and paved sidewalks. There are some ups and downs along the way\, but nothing too strenuous.
