October 28 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm
After two years of community input, the Burien City Council is preparing to take action on the Burien 2044 Comprehensive Plan at its upcoming meeting this coming Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, the city announced.
The meeting can be viewed in-person starting at 5:30 p.m. at Burien City Hall, on Comcast TV Channel 21, virtually via Zoom here, or via live-stream here.

This follows the final public hearing, held Oct. 7, as part of the ongoing “Shape Your City” campaign, which sought public feedback on the future of the city.
That work has already produced an updated Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan and a new Economic Development Action Plan.
The Comprehensive Plan, which serves as the city’s 20-year blueprint for growth, includes key goals, policies, and actions across several areas, including equity, land use, transportation, housing, economic development, sustainability, and climate change resilience:
- Equity,
- Land Use,
- Transportation,
- Housing,
- Human Services,
- Economic Development,
- Community Health & Wellbeing,
- Sustainability & Natural Environment,
- Climate Change & Resiliency,
- Parks, Recreation, and Open Space,
- Utilities, and
- Capital Facilities.
The plan also incorporates updates to the Greater Downtown Urban Center Plan, the Ambaum and Boulevard Park Community Plan, and the Transportation Master Plan.
Once adopted, the city will begin the implementation phase, which will include several additional actions before the end of the year. These include amendments to the Multifamily Tax Exemption Program, zoning and design standards code updates, and planned action ordinances for the Ambaum and Boulevard Park areas. The city will also address updates to housing and shelter programs.
“Thank you to all those who have engaged with the Shape Your City campaign, provided feedback in person or online, and attended open houses and public meetings,” the city said. “We wouldn’t be here today without the guidance of the Burien Planning Commission, community and advisory groups, and members of the public.”
The adoption of the Burien 2044 Comprehensive Plan marks the beginning of the next phase: implementation. In the remaining months of 2024, the City Council will consider several measures for approval as part of the plan’s rollout, including:
- Amending Multifamily Tax Exemption (MFTE) Program and Expansion of Residential Target Areas
- Zoning and Design Standards Code Amendments
- Planned Action Ordinances for Ambaum and Boulevard Park Community Plan
- Planned Action Ordinance for Greater Downtown Urban Center
Along with that work, the city will also focus on updating additional portions of the Comprehensive Plan, including around Emergency Shelters, Transitional Housing, Emergency Housing, and Permanent Supportive (STEP) Housing, before the end of the year.
Community members are encouraged to stay engaged in this next phase of shaping Burien’s future.
“We hope you will continue to join us in shaping your city!”
