The City of Burien is excited to join Walk-n-Talkers this Sunday, June 4

June 4, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

From our friends at WABI Burien:

Burien is developing an update to the Transportation Master Plan and Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan and wants to hear from local community voices to understand what to change, keep, and improve.

That’s where YOU come in – representatives from Public Works and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PaRCS) will join this Sunday, June 4’s Walk-n-Talk to discuss your ideas for Burien.

We’ll meet at Burien Town Square Park, and walk north into the Chelsea Park neighborhood, then back to Town Square.

Date: Sunday, June 4, 2023 (Rain or shine.)
Time: Meet-up at 2:00 p.m. Walking starts at about 2:15.
Place: Meet AT THE NORTH EDGE of Burien Town Square Park. 400 SW 152nd St.
Note: The Burien Pride Festival will still be going on Sunday, so Town Square Park will be hoppin’ (and parking will be slimmer than usual. You may get added steps for the day as you park farther away and walk to the park.)
Who: Walkers of every age, level and ability
(dogs and kitty cats are welcome, too.)
Distance: About 2.5 miles, round trip, mostly flat, a few slight inclines, with sidewalks much of the way.
Route: From Burien Town Square Park, up north into the Chelsea Park neighborhood, and back to Town Square Park. We’ve found these scenic gems in the neighborhood: Dottie Harper Park, Burien Community Garden, white-painted tree trunks, Bird-House House, Linda Hill Stormwater Park, Green House, Purple House. What new things will we spot this time around?
This is a FREE activity and draws people of many ages.

The Transportation Master Plan (TMP) helps determine our community’s current and future transportation needs, guiding how we invest in transportation over the next 20 years. The plan was last updated in 2012. We need your ideas about how to keep our transportation network safe, healthy, and efficient.

The Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan (PROS Plan) is a six-year strategic plan for the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department. The plan will look at the existing conditions of our facilities and programs, listen to community desires and priorities, identify gaps in facilities and programs, propose strategies, projects and programs to address those gaps, and finalize those strategies and a prioritized capital improvement plan in the final PROS Plan.

Want to get a jump start on the conversation? Think about the following questions to discuss while walking along on June 4th:

Transportation

  • Tell us about how you get around Burien. (e.g. Where are you typically trying to go from your home? How do you get there? What parts of town, which services, and which parks do you use?)
  • What does safety mean to you? What does it mean to be safe getting around Burien?
  • What does walkability mean to you?
  • What places are really comfortable to walk around? What areas are not?
  • What kinds of projects would you like the city to focus on to make it easier for you to walk in Burien? (sidewalks, crosswalks, curb ramps, enhanced crossings, etc.)
  • What are some barriers to you getting around today? How do those make you feel?
  • What do you want to make sure we know for this plan?

Parks

  • How important is it for you to be able to walk to a park from your home? If it is important, how far are you willing to walk? And what kind of park would you want to walk to, what do you want to do there?
  • Where do you feel we need more walking paths and trails? Are there particular places that you are trying to access or experiences you want to have on a path or trail?
