The 4th of July Major Taylor Criterium Bike Race is returning to Burien after three years!
The race has long been a Burien tradition, and this year will be the 41st edition.
Organizers tell us that the race course is different than when it was last run – the start/finish line will be located right in front of Burien City Hall, and runs up SW 152nd, then left on 6th, then left on SW 153rd to 2nd Ave SW.
This year will feature 10 races, including a Kid’s race, which starts just before the Discover Burien 4th of July Parade.
The first race will start at 7 a.m.
This year they’re expecting 250 racers – both men and women – from all over the Pacific Northwest.
Some of the proceeds from the race will benefit the Major Taylor Project.
About the Major Taylor Project
Named after African-American world champion cyclist Marshall “Major” Taylor, the Major Taylor Project (MTP) is an outreach by the Cascade Bicycle Club aimed at empowering youth through bicycling. At after-school bicycling clubs MTP students explore their communities, build confidence, and discover their power to effect change.
The Major Taylor Project reaches more than 500 youth annually in central and south King County and in Pierce County. In these areas, residents speak over 70 languages and represent over 80 nationalities. Club locations are intentionally established to reach youth in low-income and diverse neighborhoods. The Major Taylor Project has established after school clubs at over a dozen schools in the south end, including Highline, Evergreen, Foster and Tyee High Schools.
