A stretch of Des Moines Memorial Drive (DMMD) in Burien will be closed to all but local traffic from July 14 through July 23 as construction crews work to complete a major phase of the Miller Creek Stream Restoration Project.

The closure will affect traffic around DMMD and S. 144th Street, and detour routes will be clearly marked, officials said.

The project, led by the City of Burien in partnership with local and regional agencies, will restore approximately 1,200 feet of realigned Miller Creek, removing fish passage blockages and reintroducing native habitat features. Improvements include installation of large woody debris, native plantings, and restoration of the natural floodplain.

The restoration will also enhance public amenities along the Miller Creek Trail, supporting recreational use and long-term environmental sustainability.

Officials emphasized that while the road closure may be inconvenient, the long-term benefits for salmon recovery and stormwater resilience are substantial.

  1. Didn’t they already “enhance” this area once before? Then those warehouses were built and now they are doing it all over again. Why? And who is paying for the re-do?

  2. What is the history on this? Why is this the second time this area has gone through restoration?
