The City of Burien is showcasing a new installation by artist Olena Perry at The Maverick in downtown Burien (map below), on view through the end of January, 2026.

According to the city, the exhibit, titled “The Community Nextdoor,” is part of the Burien Downtown Art Project, a collaboration of Burien Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services, Merrill Gardens, and The Maverick in the heart of Burien’s urban core in South King County.

The installation is described as an upcycled work that interprets a brief but intense moment in the waters of Puget Sound, capturing 30 seconds of marine life where multiple species share the same underwater space.

In an artist statement provided by the city, Perry said the work “captures thirty seconds of concentrated marine activity, where diverse species coexist in the depths, embodying both movement and stillness” and reflects “the intricate relationships and interactions that sustain marine ecosystems, the balance between habitat, species, and the unseen rhythms of the underwater environment.”

Perry said the piece invites viewers to consider their own connection to place, community, and the natural world, and to reflect on the interdependence of living systems and the creative potential of reimagined materials. The city notes that the installation underscores how art can emerge from everyday objects and processes.

“The Community Nextdoor” is on view at The Maverick at Southwest 150th Street and Sixth Avenue Southwest in Burien. Those interested in seeing more of Perry’s work or contacting the artist can visit northhillarts.art.blog, according to the city.
