The Burien Severe Weather Shelter is seeking volunteers to help with “Operation Kitchen Deep Clean” this Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, as the shelter prepares to continue serving guests during cold weather.
The volunteer work session is scheduled from 8 a.m. to Noon and will focus on clearing and cleaning all kitchen surfaces, washing items before returning them to the kitchen and reorganizing the space.
Volunteers are welcome to help for as little as one hour or as long as four hours, organizers said.
Much of the cleaning has already been completed, and the remaining work is expected to be manageable.
“We will remove all items from the counters and floors of the kitchen, clean surfaces, clean items going back into the kitchen, then reassemble items into the kitchen,” wrote organizer Jenny Partch in a message to volunteers. “A lot of cleaning has already happened, so this is not going to be too overwhelming.”
Organizers are asking volunteers to sign up in advance so they know how many people to expect, Partch said.
The Burien Severe Weather Shelter provides overnight shelter during periods of dangerous cold and relies on community volunteers to support operations, including meal preparation and facility upkeep, according to organizers.
