Residents looking to recycle unwanted household items, dispose of confidential documents and pick up rain barrels or compost bins will have an opportunity to do so at the 2026 Spring Recycling Event and Bin/Barrel Sale this Saturday, May 30.
The event, sponsored by the cities of Burien and Normandy Park, will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center in Burien (map below). Organizers noted that no vehicles will be allowed to enter after 3 p.m.
According to event organizers, a wide variety of materials will be accepted for recycling, including household batteries, lead acid vehicle batteries, electronics, televisions, scrap wood, logs and confidential paper for shredding and recycling.
Electronics accepted include cell phones, laptops, tablets, keyboards, DVD players, scanners, fax machines, VCRs and televisions. Printers and copiers will be accepted for a $5 fee each.
The event also will accept passenger and truck tires. Up to six passenger tires measuring 18 inches or smaller may be recycled free of charge. Additional fees apply for extra tires, tires on rims and larger truck tires.
Several items will be accepted for a fee, including refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners containing chlorofluorocarbons, mattresses and box springs, porcelain tubs, toilets and sinks, and propane tanks.
Organizers said clean, dry Styrofoam blocks and packing peanuts also will be accepted. Foam cushions, hot tub covers and insulation materials will not be accepted.
A paper shredding service will be available for confidential documents. Staples are permitted, but binder clips are not. Each vehicle is limited to five file size boxes or seven grocery bags of paper.
The event will also feature a rain barrel, compost bin and worm bin sale. The first item will be free for each vehicle while supplies last. Additional items will cost $25 each.
Organizers reminded participants to remain in their vehicles except when unloading materials, pack items for quick removal and stay home if they are feeling unwell.
Hazardous waste will not be accepted at the event. Residents seeking disposal options for hazardous materials can view a flyer or call 206-296-4692 for information.
Event organizers also noted that no flatbed or dump trucks will be permitted and reserve the right to refuse oversized, commercial, contaminated, excessive or otherwise unacceptable loads.
