The popular water fountain at Burien’s Town Square Park has been shut down after sustaining recent damage that city officials say will require significant repairs before it can reopen.
The City of Burien announced on Wednesday, July 1 that the fountain is currently not operational while repair work is underway. Officials did not provide details about the nature of the damage or an estimated timeline for reopening.
“Significant repair work must be completed before the fountain can be turned back on,” the city said in its announcement. “Thank you for your patience as repairs are underway.”
City officials added that the fountain sustained recent damage requiring extensive repairs and said crews “will do our best to get it operational again as soon as possible.”
The latest closure continues a history of maintenance challenges for the popular downtown water feature:
- In 2025, the fountain’s seasonal opening was delayed for weeks because of mechanical repairs and system testing. The city ultimately reopened the feature after resolving equipment issues that included parts delays and operational testing.
- In 2019, it remained closed after substantial water damage affected the control vault, electrical system and pumps. City officials at the time attributed the damage to unauthorized access to a water supply valve while the fountain was shut down for the winter, and said additional security measures were put in place to help prevent similar incidents.
- The city has also previously described the spray park as having experienced multiple repair issues and vandalism over the years.
The Town Square Park fountain is a popular summertime attraction for children and families, particularly during warm weather.
The city has not announced when the water feature is expected to return to service.
