Join the King County Library System, SoCoCulture.org, the Greater Kent Historical Society and the Kent Black Action Commission for a Sept. 12 discussion of late Congressman John Lewis’s award-winning trilogy of graphic novels, March 1, March 2 and March 3.
These “comics with a conscience” tell how Lewis, as a young man, worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King and others to secure voting rights for Black Americans during the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
WHAT: Read one or all of these books by Congressman Lewis ahead of time (they’re available for checkout from KCLS), then join us online on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. to talk about the books and how Black Americans and their allies worked to secure voting rights for Blacks during the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.

BOOKMARKS & LANDMARKS SERIES GOES VIRTUAL THIS YEAR
The struggles that different groups of Americans have undertaken in order to win the right to vote will be the subject of three programs in the annual Bookmarks & Landmarks series, which will be conducted entirely online this fall.
A collaboration between the King County Library System and member organizations of SoCoCulture.org, Bookmarks & Landmarks kicks off its 2020 season with a program hosted by the Greater Kent Historical Society and the Kent Black Action Commission on September 12.
If you’d like to take part in this first program, please read any or all of Congressman John Lewis’s award-winning trilogy of graphic novels (March 1, March 2 and March 3) ahead of time. These “comics with a conscience” tell how Lewis, as a young man, worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King and others to secure voting rights for Black Americans during the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Also ahead of time, you can visit the Kent Historical Museum website at http://kenthistoricalmuseum.org/ or the Kent Black Action Commission website at https://kentblackactioncommission.org/ to view videotaped interviews with Kent City Councilmembers Brenda Fincher and Bill Boyce, Kent School Board Director Denise Daniels, and 47th District state legislator Rep. Debra Entenman to hear their stories of how they got involved in politics.

The second program happens on Sept. 26, 11 a.m., when the conversation shifts to women’s voting rights in a Zoom program that will be co-hosted by the Neely Mansion Association. Read Women’s Votes, Women’s Voices ahead of time – this book shows how Washington women were trailblazers in securing the right for women to vote. Then the book’s author, Shanna Stevenson, will join the conversation on September 26 to talk about her research for the book and to entertain readers’ questions.
The final program in the Bookmarks & Landmarks series will take place on Oct. 17, 2 p.m. Ahead of time, check out and read The Challenge of a Latino Immigrant in the Trump Era, by Univision news anchor Jorge Ramos. Then join the Oct. 17 Zoom conversation to talk about the book with local elected officials who themselves came from an immigrant background.
