On Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, the King County Council appointed Brianna Thomas as the new State Representative for Washington’s 34th Legislative District.
She was sworn in during Tuesday’s council meeting by Judge Rebecca C. Robertson.
Thomas, who previously served as the Chief of Staff to Seattle City Councilmember Lorena González, brings extensive experience in public service and community advocacy to her new role.
The 34th Legislative District encompasses West Seattle, Vashon Island, and parts of Burien and White Center.
Her appointment fills the vacancy left by Emily Alvarado, who was recently appointed as State Senator for the same district. Alvarado succeeded Joe Nguyễn, now serving as the Director of the Washington State Department of Commerce.
The King County Council’s decision followed a selection process involving the 34th District Democrats, who held a virtual candidate forum to evaluate potential appointees. Thomas emerged as a leading candidate due to her extensive experience in government and commitment to affordable housing, public safety, and behavioral health access.
Thomas will serve the remainder of the current term and is expected to run for election in the upcoming cycle to retain her seat.
