The Burien Severe Weather Shelter will be open overnight starting tonight – Saturday, Jan. 17 – through Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, providing a warm place to sleep for people in need during cold weather, according to organizers.
The shelter will operate each night from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. at Highline United Methodist Church, located at 13015 1st Ave. S. in Burien (map below).
The shelter is operating with limited funding from the King County Regional Homelessness Authority along with support from the City of Burien.
Organizers said the county agency uses a different threshold for opening severe weather shelters than what the Burien shelter followed in past years, which may cause confusion for residents accustomed to earlier temperature guidelines. However, they said the change allows the shelter to open more often, benefiting people experiencing homelessness.
“It is good news for our unhoused neighbors as it means we are able to be open more often,” Pastor Jenny Partch told The B-Town Blog.
Volunteers and donations are needed to help staff the shelter and provide supplies, according to the Burien Severe Weather Shelter.
“We value the people of this community who come together to help make our shelter a safe, warm, welcoming place for people in need,” Parch added.
Community members can view open volunteer shifts and donation needs through an online sign up page at https://signup.com/go/evUVULp.
Organizers thanked community members for helping make the shelter a safe and welcoming place for guests during severe weather.
