The City of Burien is seeking a qualified artist, artist team or consultant to lead a public engagement process and develop a Public Art Plan for Chelsea Park as part of a major playground replacement project, according to information from Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services.

The Public Art Plan is intended to reflect the history of Chelsea Park, the character of the surrounding neighborhood and the values of park users.

City staff said the new equipment will fit within the park’s existing footprint and will have age-appropriate features for the two primary age groups:

  • 2- to 5-year-old tot
  • 5- to 12-year-old youth.

The playground replacement is identified as a priority in the city’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Capital Improvement Plan and is funded through Community Development Block Grant dollars.

The city said the project represents an investment in the health, recreation and wellbeing of the neighborhood.

Along with new play equipment, the city intends to work with residents to help shape the design, look and feel of the updated space and explore opportunities for art that highlights community stories.

Schedule:

The city expects to select the qualified consultant, artist or team in March 2026. The completed Public Art Plan is scheduled for August 2026, with a call for artists or concept design process running from August through November 2026.
