The City of Burien has begun work on a zoning proposal that will guide future development in an area north of South 138th Street to South 128th Street along Des Moines Memorial Drive, following adoption of its Comprehensive Plan Periodic Update.
The city says the rezone effort aims to remove barriers to new and diverse job opportunities while also supporting current residents.
Officials are working with the community to shape zoning alternatives for the area, which is identified as the “North of NERA Rezone Project.”
“This engagement process is designed so the community can inform the alternative zoning proposals that will go before the Planning Commission and eventually the Burien City Council,” the city said in its project announcement.
Community members are invited to take part in several ways, including emailing comments through the project website, attending Planning Commission meetings, and reviewing mailed updates that will be sent to all property owners within the project area.

Upcoming Outreach Events
Upcoming outreach includes an “Ask Staff” information table at:
- Burien Farmers Market on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Planning Commission meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing before making a recommendation to the City Council. Final action on zoning changes will require amendments to the Burien Municipal Code and Official Zoning Map.
