Local author Gabriela Denise Frank will lead a free three-part writing workshop series in October at the Burien Library designed to provide creative reflection and self-care opportunities for caregivers.
The series, titled Forms of Care: Creative Writing for Caregivers, will take place on Saturdays, Oct. 4, 11 and 18, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Burien Library (map below).
The free workshops are open to writers of all levels, though attendance is limited to 15 and pre-registration is required.
The sessions are aimed at caregivers of partners with long-term, chronic or terminal illnesses.
Each includes short craft discussions, readings, in-session writing prompts, and opportunities to share work in a small-group setting.
Schedule
Here’s the lineup (click links to register):
- The Oct. 4 session, The Shape of Change, will explore shifting relationships and grief through poems from Victoria Chang’s OBIT.
- On Oct. 11, Exploring the Underworld will use the myth of Persephone as a metaphor for navigating the healthcare system and cycles of life and death.
- The Oct. 18 session, Terminal Surreal, will engage with ideas of mortality and meaning through the posthumously published poetry of Martha Silano.
Frank is a literary artist, editor and educator whose writing has appeared in Poetry Northwest, Poet Lore, BOMB Magazine and other publications. She is the author of How to Not Become the Breaking and a winner of the Fern Academy Prize for the essay.
The project is supported in part by 4Culture, the cultural funding agency for King County.
