Local residents will once again have the chance to learn life-saving skills this fall through the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Disaster Response Training, offered by the Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority.

The next CERT session begins in October 2025 and runs through mid-November. Classes are free and will be held in afternoon (1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or evening (6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) sessions.

Registration opened Aug. 18.

The program is designed to prepare volunteers to step in when disaster strikes and professional responders are delayed or overwhelmed. Participants will learn disaster preparedness, fire suppression, medical operations, search and rescue, disaster psychology and team organization.

CERT training includes both classroom and hands-on instruction, with lessons on treating wounds, clearing debris, extinguishing small fires, and supporting survivors under stress. Volunteers will also practice organizing into effective teams to assist the community in a crisis.

This program serves the cities of Burien, Covington, Kent, Maple Valley, SeaTac, Tukwila, and surrounding areas.
