The Highline High School Alumni Foundation (HHSAF) has inducted 102-year-old alumnus Ed Niehl into its Athletic Hall of Fame, honoring the Class of 1944 graduate during a private ceremony at his home, the foundation announced.

Niehl is a World War Two veteran who served in artillery in the European Theater.

According to the foundation, he was a three-sport athlete at Highline, competing in football, basketball and track before going on to play four years of football at Washington State University while earning his degree.

Niehl later became a longtime football coach and athletic director at Bethel High School in Spanaway. The foundation said he coached undefeated and unscored on football teams in 1955 and 1958. Both teams finished the season ranked number one in the state. Bethel High’s gymnasium was dedicated in his honor in 1981.

“The Highline High School Alumni Foundation congratulates Ed Niehl and all of the recent Athletic Hall of Fame inductees,” organizers said.
