On Tuesday, April 7, 2020 – one day after Gov. Jay Inslee declared that all schools will remain closed through the end of this school year – Highline Public Schools Superintendent Susan Enfield sent out the following letter to the Class of 2020:

A letter to the Class of 2020 from Superintendent Susan Enfield:

Dear Class of 2020,

I know Governor Inslee’s decision to keep schools closed for the remainder of the year is especially difficult for all of you. You have worked incredibly hard and were rightly looking forward to doing so much this spring, from participating in sports to service projects to prom and, of course, graduation. While we will likely be unable to hold many of these activities as planned, I am committed to honoring your accomplishments as creatively as possible and I would love to hear your ideas for how to do that. Below you will find a link to join in a ThoughtExchange on this topic. You can not only share your ideas, but also star other people’s so we know which ones are most popular among you. Please take some time to participate over the next two weeks. Once we have your input, I will schedule another webinar for the week of April 20 to share with you what we learned and give you another opportunity to offer ideas and suggestions.

Share your ideas now: https://bit.ly/39S95D0

Please know that if the Governor determines it is safe to hold graduation ceremonies in June we will be cheering almost as loudly as you and hold them as planned. If, however, in the interest of public safety he doesn’t I promise you that we will find ways to celebrate you—each of you—and all you have accomplished.

For now, please do your best to remain engaged in your own learning and communicate with your teachers, counselors and principals so that you are on track for graduation. If you have questions, ideas or need additional help you are welcome to email me at susan.enfield@highlineschools.org or call my office at 206-631-3070.

Our Highline Promise to know you by name, strength and need so you graduate prepared for the future you choose remains as strong as ever. Stay safe, healthy and strong and know that I am very proud of you.

Sincerely,
Susan
