I am Diem Nguyen, a senior at Highline High School, and I would like to submit the following:

In light of recent events, the prominent anti-Blackness in America and the lack of proper education on these critical issues in public schools is clear. Thus, the campaign “Diversify Your Narrative” was founded by two Stanford students. This campaign believes that schools have the obligation to educate its students about race, racism, and anti-racism in America through the right curriculum; and encourage productive dialogue on identity among student bodies. Currently, the texts taught in school do not adequately address these pressing issues. Diversify Your Narrative aims to change that.

The first tangible step in achieving this is through the integration of anti-racist and diverse texts in English and Literature classes. Specifically, the campaign petitions for district school boards to mandate that there be the inclusion of at least one book by a person of color per English/Literature class. The petition has garnered over 55,000 signatures nationwide.

A chapter has been formed here in Highline Public Schools. Students from Highline and Mount Rainier High School have been busy spreading the petition that demands the school board to pass this guideline.

The full petition can be found here:

Thank you so much for taking your time and energy to read this! I hope you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy during this challenging time.

Sincerely,
Diem N.
