The Port of Seattle will host a series of public workshops this fall to gather feedback on aircraft noise from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and potential strategies to reduce its impact on nearby communities.
The workshops are part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 150 Noise and Land Use Compatibility Study, a voluntary program that evaluates airport noise exposure and land uses to determine possible abatement and mitigation measures.
This is the fourth such update at SEA since 1985, according to the Port.
Residents in Burien, Des Moines, SeaTac and other South King County communities are invited to attend in-person open house-style meetings or a virtual workshop to learn more about current and projected aircraft noise, review draft noise exposure maps and suggest possible noise reduction strategies.
The sessions will be held:
- Sept. 30, 6–8 p.m. at Parkside Elementary School, Des Moines
- Oct. 2, 6–8 p.m. at Seahurst Elementary School, Burien
- Oct. 4, 10 a.m.–Noon at Glacier Middle School, SeaTac
- Oct. 15, 6 p.m. virtual meeting via Zoom

The study consists of two phases: the Noise Exposure Map phase, which uses FAA-required metrics to document sound levels, and the Noise Compatibility Program phase, which recommends abatement or mitigation strategies such as sound insulation or land use planning.
Recommendations approved by the FAA may qualify for federal funding.
The Port said the workshops are designed to provide maximum opportunities for one-on-one conversations between residents and staff, building on similar kickoff meetings held in June 2024 in Burien, Des Moines and SeaTac.
