The League of Quiet Skies Voters has announced that Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA), will keynote its April 25, 2019, Town Hall.

This free, open event will run from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 at the Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien.

Rep. Smith is a leader in the Quiet Skies Caucus in Congress, a group of Representatives who have elevated aviation noise and environmental issues to the forefront, along with introducing and passing legislation on these issues.

“In recent years, communities around Sea-Tac Airport are experiencing an increased and disproportionate share of noise and other environmental impacts from commercial aviation,” Rep. Smith said. “Worse yet, the concerns of residents in areas experiencing increased aviation traffic are not being adequately addressed. I’m looking forward to digging into the challenges at the League Town Hall. I have made it my priority to ensure that not only are residents’ concerns heard, but that solutions are put forward to reduce noise and environmental impacts for all.”

“At the local level, I have worked to bring the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to the people and have brought the concerns of residents directly to the agency,” Smith added. “More must be done – now – to understand the impact of these emissions.”

Rep. Smith joins speaker Chris McCann, creator of the Airnoise.io service which has led to over 1,880,000 complaints being registered at 39 airports nationwide, at the League of Quiet Skies Voters Town Hall.

“Congressman Smith is providing vital leadership on a federal level with the core purpose of protecting the quality of life – our health and environment – in our airport neighbor communities,” said Sheila Brush, founder of League co-sponsor Quiet Skies Puget Sound. “We look forward to the Congressman’s updates, ideas, and inspiration, particularly as we prepare for this year’s elections.”

About Rep. Adam Smith
Rep. Smith has developed a reputation for having a thoughtful and common-sense approach to governance. He serves as Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, where he is a strong advocate for our military personnel and their families.

Rep. Smith has actively pursued legislation for aviation noise and pollution relief, including the Aviation Impacted Communities Act, which requires the FAA to work with citizens in designated “aviation impacted communities” to establish community boards to address aviation impacts. The legislation requires the FAA to help communities find solutions for their issues; empowers communities to petition the agency for studies on noise and environmental impacts; and also apply for additional noise monitors and mitigation.

In recognition that communities near airports suffer from increased particle emissions, Rep. Smith introduced the Protecting Airport Communities from Particle Emissions Act, which would authorize a study on ultrafine particles and their effects on the communities around major hub airports, including Sea-Tac.

About the League of Quiet Skies Voters
As aircraft noise and emissions present increasing human health and environmental concerns, impact property values and public safety, and create social, economic, and environmental justice disparities, the League of Quiet Skies Voters seeks to empower voters living in the shadow of the 8th busiest airport in the United States with the information to fully understand the risks of this expansion, the alternatives, our rights and choices, and how to engage our policymakers for change. The League was created as an association of regional citizen-led groups including:
