MUSIC AND DANCE

Swan Lake
Grand Kyiv Ballet
Highline High School Performing Arts Center, Burien
Thursday, Feb. 19, 7 p.m

“Swan Lake is one of the most famous ballets in the world. The production is based on an ancient German legend about the charming princess Odette, who was turned into a swan by the curse of the evil sorcerer Rothbart. This mystical story unfolds to the music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky and is based on the contrast of light and darkness, Odette and Odile.

“The Grand Kyiv Ballet presents Swan Lake in a unique Ukrainian version by prominent choreographers Anatoly Shekera and Valery Kovtun.

“This is our interpretation of the world-famous work, full of the spirit of freedom and the skill of Ukrainian artists. We are showing Swan Lake all over the world as a symbol that we will not give it to the Russian aggressor who invaded Ukraine.”

Women of Americana

“Early folk, gospel, and Western swing musicians laid the groundwork for Americana, extending back to the founding mothers and fathers of country music, including Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie, and the Carter Family. From the mid-20th century through the present day, more singer-songwriter luminaries followed: Bob Dylan, The Band, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, and Brandi Carlile.

“Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States’ founding, A Celebration of American Music from Bob Dylan to Bonnie Raitt brings together some of today’s most accomplished and expressive female artists for an exuberant exploration of this expansive and singular American genre.”

“AI is on the rise. Written in 1920, this brilliant satire examines what could happen when robots free humans to pursue “…things such as perfecting themselves rather than toiling long days just for bread.” With sharp wit, provocative ideas, and eerie relevance to today’s AI boom, Čapek’s prescient masterpiece is a cautionary tale for all.”

Mohamed Gabriel and Charde’ Brown
Centennial Art Gallery, Kent
Through Friday, Feb. 27

“Charde’ Brown is a self-taught visual artist based in Auburn, and the creative force behind Mirrors of Melanin. Her powerful body of work uses acrylics, mixed media, and soft/oil pastels to explore themes of emotional depth, mental health, and cultural identity. Her art offers a raw and therapeutic lens into her personal journey as a Black woman and single mother. Inspired by her daughter, Brown also creates regal portraits of Black youth, celebrating their brilliance and affirming their place as future leaders and innovators. Through Mirrors of Melanin, Brown aims to create a sanctuary for those who feel unseen or misrepresented. Her work invites viewers to look beyond the surface.

“Mohamed Gabriel’s work is an exploration of human experience in relation to place, time, and memory. Through photography he seeks to document the subtle, often overlooked moments that define the rhythm of daily life—scenes where light, movement, and emotion converge to tell quiet yet powerful stories. Much of his imagery focuses on the interplay between people and their environments. He is drawn to the textures of life—the weathered hands of a fisherman, the joy and innocence of strangers, the way the sun filters through a market alley—each frame an intimate reflection of resilience, existence, and change. His work is about pausing to witness the beauty in the ordinary, the poetry in the fleeting, and the universal truths that connect us all.”
