December marks the darkest stretch of the year, but the shorter days also give rise to a season of celebration, reflection and community. Many people observe this time by embracing quiet traditions of candlelight, gathering with family and friends and expressing gratitude. The roots of the holiday season are tied both to the rhythms of winter and to spiritual observances, though many people celebrate in a secular way.
Two winter holidays widely recognized in the region are Christmas, the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and Chanukah, also spelled Hanukkah. According to brittanica.com, it is an 8-day festival which “commemorates in particular the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem by the lighting of candles on each day of the festival.” It lasts for eight days in remembrance of what Jews acknowledge as a miraculous lasting of a small amount of oil, lighting the temple for far longer than it should have.

This year, Dec. 25 falls on Thursday and marks the most commonly observed date for Christmas. Because of this, many churches plan additional services on Sunday, Dec. 21, including Christmas pageants, special music or other seasonal liturgies.
Chanukah will begin on Sunday, Dec. 14, and continue through Monday, Dec. 22, 2025. A celebration at the Highline Heritage Museum is planned for Sunday, Dec. 14, featuring traditional Chanukah activities and a menorah lighting.
The Highline Heritage Museum will host a Christmas celebration rooted in Latino cultural traditions on Saturday, Dec. 13. La Posada has become a well attended and joyful local festival, featuring the colors, culture and cuisine of the Hispanic community and making the museum a hub for connection during this season.
To support community engagement during the holidays, a directory of local churches and synagogues is included for readers interested in learning more about congregations in the area. Standard listings are provided at no cost, while featured listings are offered for a modest fee.
Every effort was made to capture the information accurately, and create an ample representation; however, should you find an error or omission or want to advertise, please email vtheresa@comcast.net.
A final note:
We hereby honor and affirm all faith traditions, and look forward to continue expanding this feature to highlight a further diversity of celebrations. If you have a winter celebration to share please email vtheresa@comcast.net.
