The Soil & Water Stewardship Program at Tilth Alliance is actively recruiting for its 2026 cohort.
King County residents who are passionate about the local environment, food systems and community building are encouraged to apply for this eight-month comprehensive training program.
The Soil & Water Stewards meet one Wednesday evening (online) and one Saturday (in-person) per month, from March until October to discuss and practice land stewardship in a diverse community-oriented setting.
Adults of all ages and ethnic backgrounds who are interested in these topics can apply to join.
Monthly online sessions feature local experts who provide vital information regarding local issues such as:
- Assessing and amending soil health
- Conserving water with drip irrigation and rain water catchment
- Regenerative landscape design and organic gardening principles
- Food equity and environmental justice
- Waste stream and natural resource management
- Ecological restoration and biological remediation
- Applying Native Sciences and Traditional Ecological Knowledge to land care
During monthly in-person sessions, participants will partner with local organizations, parks, schools and gardens throughout King County for hands-on projects for experiential learning and community building.
These projects are designed to reinforce learnings, benefit local organizations and connect stewards to urban land care practices.
Hands-on projects include:
- Installing garden beds and drip irrigation in community and school gardens
- Building composting systems such as worm bins, bokashi, hot compost
- Designing and creating rainwater catchment like rain barrels, cisterns, rain gardens
- Employing bioremediation and restoration techniques to heal urban contamination
- Planting, tending, harvesting and distributing culturally relevant crops for local gardeners and eaters
Applicants to Tilth Alliance’s Soil & Water Stewardship Program may come from all backgrounds, ethnicities, age groups, and orientations as long as they are passionate about local ecosystems and dedicated to community engagement.
A limited number of stipends are available to help offset costs such as transportation or childcare.
