A heat advisory will blanket the region starting at 11 a.m. this Friday, Aug. 22, through 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, prompting city officials to open the Burien Severe Weather Shelter at Highline United Methodist Church (map below).

“Heat will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses for those who are sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling or adequate hydration,” the National Weather Service said.

Starting Friday, the church will welcome residents seeking relief from the rising temperatures.

The cooling center will operate daily through Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The cooling center aims to provide a safe, air‑conditioned refuge during the hottest hours of the day.

The advisory comes as south King County braces for prolonged heat, which local authorities warn could pose health risks to vulnerable populations.

Meteorologists said that temps will start to cool down again on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
