Want to recapture the charm of a tropical vacation? Consider planting a dazzling Hibiscus plant. You can enjoy them as an indoor plant and enjoy blooming from summer through fall. If you prefer to raise them outdoors, you can plant them in large pots on wheeled coasters, and plan to move them indoors for overwintering.
As a tropical plant, Hibiscus will not tolerate freezing, as they also require full sun. Six hours of full sun is desired, though if you must plant in partial shade they will survive. However, you will not enjoy their fullest blooming potential. And what a potential it is! Either in hot pink, deep red, white, orange, peach or purple, the blooms are trumpet-shaped and ebullient.
Further care of Hibiscus includes attentive watering. These are thirsty plants and will need up to daily watering during the dog days of summer. Suceptible to aphids and spider mites, wise gardeners will protect them with a spray of insecticidal soap, which is also an environmentally friendly alternative to harsh chemicals.
Along with being simply beautiful, Hibiscus are prized by many for their use in flavoring, teas and as folk medicines. Although there are differing opinions as to the efficacy of Hibiscus as a nutritional supplement, supporters claim that it can help balance metabolism, lower cholesterol, and prevent high blood pressure. What is clear is that the deep red blooms are rich in the antioxidant anthocyanin, which is the same substance that can be found in berries and red wine, giving them their color.
Whether you wish to harvest blooms or simply enjoy the bloomin’ show through summer, hibiscus are a power house of tropical flare you can enjoy right here in the Pacific Northwest.
