6% UTILITY TAX BEING CONSIDERED
BY THE CITY OF BURIEN
Southwest Suburban Sewer District is issuing this notice to inform its customers that the City of Burien is considering adopting a 6% utility tax on water and sewer service. If a utility tax is adopted, and you are located within Burien and receive water or sewer service from Southwest Suburban Sewer District, Water District No. 20, Water District No. 49 or Valley View Sewer District, your water and sewer bills will be increased by at least 6%. For Southwest Suburban Sewer District customers, this will result in an increase of at least $4.41 to your sewer service bill. For customers receiving both water and sewer service, you could experience an increase of at least 6% on each bill. The water and sewer districts have made attempts to negotiate franchise agreements with the City to limit future City-imposed utility taxes being added on top of a proposed 6% franchise fee to be paid under franchise agreements. However, the City notified the district that: “The City is unwilling to enter into a franchise which requires the City to agree not to impose any tax during the period of the franchise.” What this means is the City wants to retain the right to impose utility taxes in addition to the 6% franchise fee to be paid under franchise agreements. The City also notified the district that: “The City clearly stated its intention to impose a 6% franchise fee and/or a 6% utility tax.
If you are concerned about the City imposing a utility tax on the water and sewer districts, the districts encourage you to contact the Burien City Manager and/or City Council and to become involved in this important discussion.
