Burien Localists launches 'Project: Barrier Breakers (Spanish Speakers Social)' 1 Our friends at the Burien Localists group have just launched a great new ongoing event – ‘Project: Barrier Breakers (Spanish Speakers Social)’ – where they’re matching people whose native language is Spanish with people who use English as their primary language. According to US Census data, 24 percent of B-Town’s ~51,000 population is Hispanic/Latino. This new project is aimed at helping to bridge any language/culture divide(s) by bringing people together to talk, and they’re seeking volunteers to join. Here’s more from their website:

Spanish is a useful language: It’s spoken in over 20 countries; you can listen to and understand a variety of new media sources; and, perhaps most importantly, you can better connect with the Spanish-speaking people in your community. The idea is simple: Match people whose native language is Spanish with people that use English as their primary language, and encourage them to get together over a beer, coffee, dinner, etc.  English speakers learn Spanish, and Spanish speakers lean English. Exchange culture and make new friends. Sounds okay, right? This project is just starting out, so keep an eye on this page for updates as we develop the program, or you can just go ahead and join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/LocalistsBurien/
If you’d like to take part in this project or have any questions, please email [email protected]. Here’s more on this positive community group founded by Rob Halpin:
Localists are people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and do what’s needed to make their city better. We focus on issues that are apolitical, issues on which everyone can agree. Pick up trash around a playground; help an elderly neighbour get her groceries; help organizing a soccer game for kids; coordinate a street cleaning event… It absolutely doesn’t matter how small the deed is; get to it and inspire others. Localists also partners with other local organizations that want to make things better. Check out our Volunteer and Donations sections for ways to help them out. We also have a number of large and small Projects going on at the moment. Check them out and see if you can/would like to lend a hand.
