A heat advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21 to 11 p.m. Wednesday, July 22 for parts of South King County, with high temperatures expected to reach 88 to 95 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.
The advisory covers the lowlands of King County, Seattle, the Eastside, Eastern Kitsap County, parts of Snohomish County, along with foothills, valleys and lowlands in Pierce County.
The weather service said low temperatures are expected to range from 60 to 65 degrees, adding that the heat will pose a moderate to major risk of heat illness.
Heat will significantly increase the risk of illness for people sensitive to high temperatures, especially those without effective cooling or adequate hydration, according to the weather service. Areas closest to the water are expected to have cooler daytime high temperatures.
The weather service urged people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.
People who work or spend time outdoors should take extra precautions, reschedule strenuous activities for early morning or evening when possible, and wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing, according to the advisory. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned places for outdoor workers.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location. “Heat stroke is an emergency,” the weather service said. “Call 911.”
“We have a tricky forecast coming up here,” local meteorologist Michael Snyder said. “We have thunderstorm potential. We have some pretty dramatic heat coming up across the Pacific Northwest as well.”
