The Burien Severe Weather Shelter will keep its day center open extra hours this week because of heat and wildfire smoke, according to shelter organizers.
In addition to regular hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, the center is planning to open from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6.
The extended hours offer a place for people in Burien and nearby South King County communities to get indoors during unhealthy weather conditions.
Donations Sought
The shelter is seeking donations of:
- Lunch supplies
- Cold treats
- Clothing and hygiene items
Requested food items include:
- Ham and turkey lunch meat
- Sliced cheddar, provolone or havarti style cheeses
- Large wide pan bread
- Fruit salad fruits
- Ice cream bars, ice cream sandwiches, party size tubs of vanilla ice cream, Popsicles or Otter Pops
- Individual chip bags
Organizers said the center has enough condiments.
Other requested items include:
- Disposable razors
- Men’s boxer briefs in sizes small, medium, large and extra large
- White or black tube and crew socks
Donations may be dropped off whenever the center is open at the lower level door on the southeast corner of Highline United Methodist Church at 13015 First Ave South:
It’s sad to see shelters needing donations during such rough weather. I wonder how the community is rallying around this.
