A unique partnership between BAT Theatre’s “Sandwich Ministry” and Transform Burien has delivered more than 400 fresh sandwiches to local residents in need, a milestone that’s drawing praise from community members and those who benefit from the donations.

The donation effort, launched by BAT as part of its ongoing community engagement, was initially met with some skepticism about its scale.

According to a representative identified as the Procurement Minister at Transform Burien, she thought, “how many sandwiches could that be? Not many, likely.” Instead, BAT’s production has surpassed expectations, delivering hundreds of sandwiches that have become a vital resource for those without regular access to meals.

The Procurement Minister noted the sandwiches’ impact.

“When you do not have access to a way to cook, these are a lifesaver,” she said. “When they put the sandwiches in the refrigerator for people to take, they are gone in an hour or less.”

In addition to feeding the hungry, BAT’s efforts have drawn positive reviews. Alia Sinclair said the following in her review for The B-Town Blog:

“The message of ‘The Sandwich Ministry‘ is extremely apt for our times, when so many struggle to feel accepted, supported and safe. The show explores how traditions and institutions may have failed us, but in the end, it’s us as individuals who have the power to make a choice, show up, and lead our lives with love.”

There are just two weekends left for audiences to see “The Sandwich Ministry,” which we saw this weekend and highly recommend (and don’t forget you can use the code BLOG to save $3 off) – get your tickets here.

BAT is also encouraging community support through GiveBIG on May 6-7, a regional fundraising campaign, to help cover sandwich costs and continue their outreach.

Next up at BAT is a sold-out Cabaret Night on May 5, with reservations open for the June 2 performance, “A Baritone and a Tenor, What Could Go Wrong?More info here.

Movie Music Karaoke will also be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13 at the Tin Room in Burien.
