The Burien City Council will convene for a special meeting on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., with an agenda focused on housing policy, budget amendments, and economic development.

The meeting will open with proclamations recognizing Public Works Week (May 18–24) and Affordable Housing Week (May 12–16).

“The City of Burien recognizes the escalating crisis in lack of housing affordability,” states the Affordable Housing Week proclamation. “We recommit ourselves to ensuring that all residents in Burien live with dignity in safe, healthy, and affordable homes.”

The agenda includes a presentation updating the Council on House Bill 1754 and its implications for regulating temporary encampments hosted by religious organizations.

Agenda Highlights

Key items on the business agenda include:

  • Burien Business and Economic Development Partnership (BEDP) Annual Report and Work Plan, presented by Economic Development Manager Chris Craig.
  • Discussion on a proposed levy lid lift and ballot considerations, with input from City Manager Adolfo Bailon, Finance Director Casey Headley, and a legal representative from Pacifica Law Group.
  • Approval of updates to the 2025–26 Human Services General Fund allocations, including a grant to the Children’s Therapy Center.
  • Adoption of multiple ordinances, including Ordinance No. 866 (budget amendment) and Ordinance No. 869 (amending BMC 10.15.075).
  • Consideration of Ordinance No. 871, which proposes repealing sections of Burien Municipal Code Chapter 5.63 related to rental housing inspections.

Also on the agenda is a resolution approving the city’s Commute Trip Reduction Plan for 2025–29.
