Sam Méndez, a longtime community advocate and civic leader, has officially announced his campaign for Position 3 on the Burien City Council, pledging to focus on inclusive growth, safe streets, accessible parks and a sustainable future for the city.

Position 3 is currently held by Jimmy Matta, who announced in April that he would not be seeking reelection in 2025.

“I’m running for Burien City Council because the call to serve my community has never left me,” Méndez said in a statement. “I want to make sure every neighbor feels safe walking and biking their streets and every child has access to outstanding parks and recreation programs.”

Méndez is a privacy attorney who lives in Burien with his wife and toddler. He framed his campaign as a personal mission to build a city where families thrive.

“As a father to a young toddler, this work is deeply personal. I’m committed to building a Burien where every child can grow up surrounded by opportunity, safety, and a real sense of belonging,” he said.

His campaign has already drawn support from several high-profile endorsers, including King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay, 33rd District Sen. Tina Orwall, Burien Deputy Mayor Sarah Moore and Councilmember Hugo Garcia.

“Their backing underscores Méndez’s commitment to Méndez’s priorities on building more city infrastructure where more people can thrive, regardless of income or background,” according to his candidate statement.

Méndez’s platform emphasizes infrastructure investment, community safety, and equitable access to public spaces and services for residents of all backgrounds.

A campaign kickoff event is scheduled for Sunday, May 18 at 1 p.m., with the location to be shared upon RSVP. To RSVP, please visit bit.ly/SamMendezKickoff or contact info@electmendez.com.

  1. With those endorsements you can be assured he will just push for Progressive ideals which have never served Burien well. Look what Krystal and Cydney left behind after they were run out, hard pass.

  2. You see who is endorsing Sam ⬆️… Do you want the City of Burien to go “backwards” it has barely gotten its feet back on the ground and is walking in a positive forward motion. I can see nothing but a downward spiral if this happens.

  3. Sam Mendez would be AWFUL for public safety. He is pro homeless, pro crime, pro King County control of Burien.

Make no mistake, he is directly aligned with previous council failures Cydney Moore and Krystal Marx. As well as the small group of local agitators that have terrorized Burien the last few years.

    1. Exactly! Why go backwards when we have made great advances these past few months.
