The Burien Severe Weather Shelter is calling on the community to support its efforts to provide essential resources and hospitality to neighbors in need during harsh winter conditions.

Operated by Highline United Methodist Church, the shelter offers services such as clothing, blankets, food, and first aid supplies, in addition to a dedicated team of volunteers.

This year, the shelter expanded its services to include a Day Center, open two days a week. The center provides hot meals, clothing, personal supplies, showers, and assistance accessing services like case management and housing. On Thanksgiving Day, the shelter served a full turkey dinner to 35 people and helped nine individuals secure housing at the DESC Bloomside building in Burien.

While grants cover some operational costs, donations are essential to meet ongoing needs, including food, clothing, supplies, and showers. With temperatures nearing the shelter’s activation threshold, the organization is seeking cold-weather clothing and financial contributions to stock up on critical items like new underwear, gloves, and pants.

  1. Helped secure housing at the Burien DESC building for 35 people, does that mean a promise or that they received housing because I thought the building was a maximum capacity?
