Hospitality House of South King County is seeking additional overnight volunteers to help support its shelter operations in Burien, saying community members play a vital role in providing residents with a safe place to rest.
Volunteers contributed more than 1,200 overnight service hours during 2025, helping the nonprofit keep its doors open and maintain overnight operations.
“Hospitality House relies on volunteers to help keep our doors open and give residents a safe place to rest,” the organization said in a recent announcement.
The nonprofit said overnight volunteers handle a variety of basic responsibilities, including responding to simple client requests and questions, securing the shelter overnight, preparing the facility for the morning and being available in the event of an emergency.
Hospitality House also hopes to reassure prospective volunteers who may be hesitant about the role.
“Overnight volunteering is way less intimidating than people think,” the organization said, noting that volunteers are able to sleep during the shift on a daybed located in the office.
According to Hospitality House, volunteers must be at least 18-years-old and pass a background check before serving in the overnight role.

The organization has also created an informational video that walks prospective volunteers through a typical overnight shift and explains what to expect:
