The City of Burien announced on Monday, Oct. 19, 2020 that it is allocating $300,000 from federal CARES Act funding to child care providers to pay for financial assistance to families who need child care.

This funding is part of the city’s response to both the public health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Caregivers who are essential workers or who fall within income guidelines and have had their income, work schedule, or access to child care be negatively impacted by COVID-19 can apply by Nov. 6, 2020.

“One of the most urgent needs we have heard from our community is the need for affordable child care,” said Colleen Brandt-Schluter, Human Services Manager, City of Burien. “Even before the pandemic, child care providers struggled to keep up with demand. This short-term funding helps meet an immediate need.”

“We know that many of our local child care providers did not receive funding from the Paycheck Protection Program, or did not receive enough,” said Chris Craig, Economic Development Manager, City of Burien. “Many of our local providers are owned by women and women of color, who have been economically hardest hit by the pandemic. This funding will not only help Burien’s working families struggling with child care costs, but it will also help Burien child care businesses stay open through these challenging times.”

Child Care Resources, an agency that helps match parents with affordable child care, will receive and administer the funding. Child Care Resources works with families, child care providers, community organizations and advocacy groups in order to improve the quality of early childhood care in our region. They support families in their search for child care, assist families experiencing homelessness with child care costs, coach and provide resources for child care professionals, and train and empower low-income and refugee women pursuing careers in early learning.

This funding will supplement the support King County is providing through the new King County CARES Child Care Financial Assistance program.
