The City of Burien this week announced that it is reaffirming its support for transgender and gender-diverse residents, citing the importance of inclusion, dignity, and safety amid what advocates describe as a wave of federal rollbacks on transgender rights.
The Burien City Council renewed its formal support during a meeting on Feb. 24, 2025, just ahead of International Transgender Day of Visibility, observed annually on March 31. In a recent statement, city officials reiterated their dedication to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
“By continuing to lean into our values, Burien can be a place where all can thrive,” said City Manager Adolfo Bailon. “We look forward to maintaining this momentum as some of our beloved annual traditions are just around the corner – the ceremonial raising of the Pride Progress flag above City Hall and celebrating Burien Pride’s three-day event with the community.”
City staff are also developing new inclusive language guidelines aimed at reducing harm and improving communication. Officials emphasized that the city’s anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies apply to all employees and residents.
The city’s stance comes in response to recent federal actions that transgender advocates say undermine key protections, including challenges to anti-discrimination laws and restrictions on updating gender markers on federal identification.
“These actions undermine the rights and dignity of transgender and gender-diverse individuals,” said Gabriel Neuman, JD, policy counsel and government relations manager at GSBA, Washington state’s LGBTQ+ and allied chamber of commerce.
Burien officials say everyone has a role to play in promoting equality and respect. Through visible action and policy, the city hopes to lead by example in building a more just and equitable community.

Thank you to our council and governance. I may not agree with everything you do, but I appreciate the support when it comes to civic rights.
