The City of Burien has launched a new online portal allowing businesses to file business and occupation tax returns electronically, replacing the previous requirement to mail printed returns and payments.

City officials announced Friday that Burien is the first city in Washington to partner with software vendor OpenGov to successfully launch the online B&O tax system.

“Our team is focused on delivering solutions that uphold the highest standards of accountability and transparency while creating greater efficiencies for our staff and the community,” Finance Director Casey Headley said in a statement. “Moving to a more efficient online system simplifies the process for taxpayers in addition to helping redirect valuable staff time that was previously dedicated to supporting a burdensome, manual process.”

The city assesses a B&O tax on businesses with annual gross receipts of more than $200,000. Effective Jan. 1, 2025, the tax rate is 0.2 percent on taxable gross receipts above that threshold.

Businesses with annual gross receipts of $200,000 or less remain below the tax exemption level but are still required to file a return with the city by the due date if they are registered and engaging in business in Burien as defined in Burien Municipal Code Chapter 3.11.

Through the new portal, businesses can file returns and submit payments online. The Finance Department is working to provide secure access codes to new registrants.

Questions and requests for prior year paper forms for 2024 and earlier can be emailed to TaxAndLicensing@burienwa.gov, according to the city.
