The first round of election results for Burien’s Initiative 1 – for a new minimum wage – were released Tuesday night, Feb. 11, 2025, and indicates that the measure is passing with 54.33% of the vote.

With 2,766 votes in favor and 2,325 votes against, the measure holds a nearly nine-point lead in the initial count. It needs a simple majority to win.

King County Elections reported that 5,094 ballots have been counted for this Special Election so far, representing 16.9% of Burien’s 30,146 registered voters.

Additional ballots are expected to be counted in the coming days as mail-in votes continue to be processed.

Burien Initiative 1, which was placed on the ballot through a citizen-led petition effort, has drawn strong opinions from both supporters and opponents. While the measure’s passage is not yet final, early results suggest a favorable outcome for its proponents.

The next election results update is expected in the coming days as King County Elections continues to process ballots.

Final certification of the election is scheduled for later this month.
