The Burien Severe Weather Shelter is extending its operations for one more night, staying open Friday, Feb. 14, and closing Saturday morning, Feb. 15, 2025, as freezing temperatures persist in the region.

Shelter organizers said the decision to remain open was based on the harsh weather conditions rather than the coincidence of Valentine’s Day.

“We are seeing pretty standard high numbers of individuals just looking for a warm place to be…these freezing days don’t help. People are coming in colder than ever,” shelter organizers said in a statement.

The shelter, housed within Highline United Methodist Church in Burien (map below), will transition back to its original purpose following its Saturday morning closure. Organizers are planning volunteer work parties on Saturday to help with the conversion.

While the added night of service offers temporary relief for those in need, volunteers acknowledged the toll the extended cold snap has taken.
