Dr. Kent D. “Matt” Matheson, former Highline Public Schools Superintendent, passed away recently, the district announced.

Matheson served as Superintendent of Highline Public Schools in the early 1990s, and was also a trustee on the board of Highline Hospital.

In 1992 he was named Superintendent of the Year by the Washington Association of School Administrators. He also served as Superintendent for the Ellensburg School District, as well in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Condolences go out to his wife, Janie, and all who knew and loved him.

There will be a celebration of his life at the Normandy Park Cove on Saturday, Nov. 18.

  1. I will miss his thoughtfulness, his kindness, his perspective on things, but most of all I will miss his sense of humor and his laugh.
    One could not hope for a better neighbor or friend.

  2. Oh my, I was so sad to see Kent had passed away. I worked for him while my husband was a student at CWU in Ellensburg, WA in 1968. He was then Principal at Ellensburg High School. He was such a nice person. One hot summer night my husband and I decided to sleep outside because the house was so hot. I woke up in the morning, having been bitten by an insect, and my eye and face were swollen so much that I could hardly see. Principal Matheson and I were the only two working in the office in the summer. When I walked into the office that morning, I thought he was going to fall off of his chair when he saw my face. I looked like a monster. We started laughing until years filled our eyes. It took a few days until I looked human again. I remember you fondly Mr. M.
