In conjunction with its “Hope in Hard Times” exhibit, the Highline Historical Society will be presenting a free workshop series on saving family treasures, tracing your family tree, caring for the elderly and adults with disabilities, passing on the family business, and planning for the future.
Workshops will run Thursday, Nov. 14 through Thursday, Dec. 12.
The first workshop, “Tracing Your Family Tree,” will take place in partnership with a South King County Genealogical Society expert who will help participants trace your family’s roots back to the Great Depression and before. This workshop will take place Thursday, November 14, from 6:30-8 PM.
On Thursday, November 21, Sterling Savings Bank Manager Lynda Isernio will moderate a “Business Succession” panel featuring Gerald Hoefer, president of Glendale Heating and Air Conditioning, and David Hawthorne, president of Hawthorne & Co. Certified Public Accountants. This panel of family business leaders highlights several area success stories and provides tips for transitioning family businesses from one generation to the next.
There will be no program during Thanksgiving week, but on the following Thursday, December 5, the Historical Society will host a workshop on “Caring for our Elders, Adults with Disabilities and Each Other.” Deborah Wakefield, financial services representative for New York Life, will lead panelists Judy Pigott, Personal Safety Nets; Marla Beck, Andelcare (Home Care & Home Health); and Kathy Sellars and Susan Carmony, LifeSPAN (Lifetime Secure Personal Assistance Network) in a discussion about taking care of the people we love.
The workshop series concludes on December 12, when Highline Historical Society curator Nancy Salguero McKay highlights key ways to preserve your family collections – especially important if your are planning to downsize or if you are concerned about your collection of family memorabilia.
All of these workshops take place on Thursday evenings, 6:30-8 PM, at the Hope in Hard Times exhibit, which is located in the “Pop-Up Museum” at 216 SW 153rd Street in Burien.
